Muriel L Guest and Barbara Guest were two of the children of William Guest and Elizabeth Louisa Peaceful. My records indicate that both were born at 88 Hillside, Wellington, Shropshire.
The 1939 Register indicates that Muriel was born on 7th April 1915. But Barbara was born on 27th July 1915. There's something not quite right here. Either I've done something stupid or the records are a bit dodgy.
Also, on the 1939 Register Muriel's surname of Guest has been crossed out and the name "Alim" written above. She didn't take the name Alim until 1942 when she got married so obviously the details on the 1939 Register were being altered and some would say "tampered with" long after the event.
Can anyone shed any light on any of this?

Hi, dates of birth are quite often slightly out on the 1939 Register although commonly the day and month are correct but the year is wrong.
The 1939 Register was used as a working document by the NHS for years until it was digitised in the 1980's so entries were updated as events occurred. Most frequently for women that was a change of name on marriage as you mention here.

Many thanks Debra, Mckha489 and Pheno. I certainly have a better understanding of things now. I'm pretty new to the 1939 Register so the pointer to the National Archives page was very useful.
