Title: Help to identify military uniform
Post by: JIllenberger on Tuesday 02 April 19 03:41 BST (UK)
Hello, I am trying to identify the country and approximate time frame for this uniform.  It looks similar to an Austrian uniform, but I can't be sure.  Some of the metals look Austrian as well.   If the specific conflict is apparent that would be great to know as well.

Welcome to rootschat JIIIenberger.

It seems that Krzanowski had photographaphic studios in Czernowitz, Austria-Hungary (today Chernivtsi, Ukraine).

Is there anything on the other side of your lovely photograph? If so, could you post a scan of it? That might help narrow down a possible date, and with that we might be able to work out which conflict/s your chap was involved in.

The folding of the medal ribbons seems unusual.*

Your finds of an Austrian uniform and medals seems like it might be correct.

Do you know his date and place of birth?

* this seems to confirm an austro-hungarian uniform

There are a few likely candidates here:
http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk/decorat.htm
(it is a little difficult comparing colour images to your black and white photo)

I have only had a quick look so far, but the second medal from the right looks a bit like this one towards the bottom of the images in the link above:
The Bosnian-Herzegovina Commemorative Medal 1909

Added: I don't know if that works out date wise for the photo or fits with what you know about the chap.

I have had a bit of a search for a matching uniform but can't see anything Austro-Hungarian with that distinctive collar.

I'm sure someone will find it for you.  :)

I do not know the birth date of the individual in the photo.   I am working on our genealogy and this is just one of many photos without a name or date.  I have a whole box of pretty old photos, most in the 1800s, some older.  This part of the family is from Austria and Czech, my grandfather and great grandfather were born in Austria, the great great grandfather was born in Czech. in 1792.  I was hoping this would be him, but if the date of 1909 is accurate than certainly this must be another family member.   I thought I had the picture of the backside here, but it's on my home computer.  I'll post later.  No names or dates on the back though.   (I wish it were that easy)

Welcome to rootschat JIIIenberger.

Your photo was taken at a Krzanowski Studio in Lviv (We Lwowie), Ukraine not the one in Czernowitz.
Not able to determine if the two studios are linked or if they are independent with the same name of
Krzanowski.

Here is an image of the back side of the photo I posted earlier.

Ah, that helps clarify, thanks Tony. I can't find any mentions of this photographer in this place, but someone else may have more success. The first initial on the back of the photo looks like "J" so I wonder if it is Johann - which is the name of the one in Czernowitz. :-\

Hopefully now we can see the back of the photo this might help someone give it date. :)

The link below gives a date of 1892-1900 for the Lviv Studio:

http://www.fotorevers.eu/miejscowosc/Lw!F3w/1660/

The Polish Jan Krzanowski is equivalent to the German Johann Krzanowski.
However the Lviv studio uses Polish language whereas the Czernowitz studio uses German.
The rear of photos only advertise one studio.

Tony

Added: The photographer in the link is Jan Krzanowski, but the photo studio is Adela Lwow

So the photo studio was only in business for those years?

As an aside .... Does anyone know the significance of the feathers dangling from his button?

That looks like a length of chain to me. Rather in the style of the cords worn by ADCs.

The medal in the centre, under his chin, looks like Silver Medal for Bravery 2nd Class (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_for_Bravery_(Austria-Hungary))
The third one, which ruskie suggested might be a 1909 medal, could possibly be The Prague Militia Medal 1866 (http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk/decorat.htm)
Can't identify the others at the moment.

The design on the back is typically 1870's & possibly into the early 80's but I wouldn't put it more recent than that.

The fotorever site is very interesting, does it just show examples of the different photography studios?  Is it limited to studios from certain countries?  For example, I noticed in the introduction it mentions Atelier, that would be the photographer correct?  I have photos with this name on them, mainly from Austria though.

Atelier in this context means Studio.

Ah, okay, I understand, so this image means the photographer is Heinrich Harmsen.  The names listed on the site are of photographers.  I just want to make sure I understand how that site is set up, google translate only works so well.  :)
