Title: Marriage for Michael Mulligan and Catherine Higgins in New York about 1857
Post by: Pat38 on Friday 05 April 19 22:44 BST (UK)
Hello
Would their be any Marriage Records available for New York in the 1850's?
I am looking for a Marriage (probably Catholic) for Michael Mulligan and Catherine Higgins both from Ireland. On the 1880 Census they say they were married in 1857. They had their first child Eliza in 1858 then John in 1860/1861.
They lived in New York since emigrating from Ireland around 1851.
Michael Mulligan's father was John.
I think Catherine Higgins's father will be Patrick.
Thank you
Pat Berry

The 1880 census does not give a year of marriage, unless the people were married within the census year.  The 1900, 1910, and 1930 census do give info that can help you estimate the year of marriage, if they lived that long.

There are some old New York marriages here - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1680847 and here - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2143225

Find My Past has some NYC Catholic parish marriages.  I don't see yours, but they may be adding more in the future.

Hello
Sorry I haven't been able to reply sooner but I was without the Internet for the past week.
I obtained the year 1857 for Catherine Higgins and Michael Mulligan's marriage from the 1900 USA Census.
On this Census they both state different years of birth. Michael born 1843 and Catherine 1840. They were living at 246 6th Avenue Queens New York.
On the 1880 Census they state their years of birth as Michael 1835 and Catherine 1835. They were living at 151 Pervis Street Queens New York.
Michael Mulligan died on 27 September 1907 at 250 6th Avenue Queens New York and was buried on 30 September 1907 in Calvary. Parents John Mulligan and Catherine Higgins (His wife was Catherine Higgins?)
Catherine Mulligan died 23 December 1909 in Queens New York and was buried on 26 December 1909 in Calvary. Her parents were Patrick Higgins and Mary Duffy.
I found one of their children on the 1870 US State Census Eliza Mulligan aged 12 years living with a Helen Higgins aged 40 and her family. Also in same street was a Michael Higgins aged 30 wife Winnifred 26 and their family. There was no sign of Michael Mulligan and Catherine.???
Thank you for your help. I will check out Family Search again for the Marriage around 1857.
Regards
Pat Berry

I may have found newspaper articles referencing their 50th anniversary.  It may help if others are searching to note that they lived in Queens, New York.  When people refer to New York generally, as you did, most people would think you meant New York County, which is Manhattan.

This newspaper from 5 Feb. 1907 has an article on the top left referring to 50 Years of Wedded Life for Mr. & Mrs. Michael Mulligan of Sixth Avenue, Astoria.  http://www.fultonhistory.com/Newspaper%2015/Brooklyn%20NY%20Daily%20Star/Brooklyn%20NY%20Daily%20Star%201907/Brooklyn%20NY%20Daily%20Star%201907%20-%200190.pdf

This one from 1932 references the same event under the 25 Years Ago column and is a bit easier to read - http://www.fultonhistory.com/Newspaper%2015/Brooklyn%20NY%20Daily%20Star/Brooklyn%20NY%20Daily%20Star%201932/Brooklyn%20NY%20Daily%20Star%201932%20-%200526.pdf

Hello
Thank you very much for finding those newspaper reports for me. They look like the correct couple. So the Marriage was on 4 February 1857.
I checked Family Search but couldn't find it there. Marriages of some of their children are there though.
Anyway Thank you once again.
Regards

PS I have added "Queens" to the addresses in my last post. Thank you for pointing out that.
