My journey starts with Mary Cottam whose father was William Cottam as listed on her marriage banns to William Rigby in 1834 Preston. She gives her birth place as Broughton and in 1841 is living with her mother Betty. Mary’s baptism is Dec 1812 at St Mary’s Goosnargh, abode Whittingham. William Cottam died in 1836 age 49, giving his birth 1787/1788. My problem is there are two William Cottam Baptisms for 1788 and two William Cottam marriages to Betty/ Elizabeth, 1809 and 1811. Can anyone please help before I mix the two families up. Many thanks as always.

Banns don't normally name fathers, are these records online as I wondered if they contained any other information

The baptism of the oldest child showing on the 1841 census with mother Betty was in 1810 so presumably the earlier marriage of the two. The baptism of John does however say William & Elizabeth

Thanks to both of you, and yes Rosie99, you are right, my mistake, the marriage info for Mary that states father William Cottam, was her 2nd marriage to Henry Hull in 1862. Margaret Lewis was a witness.

Another question mark! There is a baptism for Elizabeth Crampton 1789 St Johns Broughton. If this is indeed my Betty....ahhh!

Thanks Colin, my brain is totally fried!!!!! One thing, don’t know how relevant, the other William and wife Elizabeth are listed in 1861 Newton St Preston with son Cuthbert. Could Cuddy in the William and Jennet family be short for Cuthbert? James, son of William and Betty marriage 1859 it says father William late. Again Margaret Lewis is a witness. Also brides father late William in Betty b1819 marriage in 1848.

Just to add more confusion, on the death of Betty 1859 Nelson St, Margaret Lewis and her family, also Mary and William Rigby’s son, William are at Nelson St in 1861 census. Wonder if that is just coincidence!

Thanks Colin. I do think you’re right, in that William marriage to Elizabeth Lofthouse is the William of William and Jennet because of Ann as witness and the connection to the name Cuthbert. I have since however looked at the other William, father John. I have found 2 other births, James 1783 at Broughton, abode Barton and Betty 1786 also Broughton and Barton. What I find interesting is in 1861 James is living at Woodplumpton, birth is listed as Myerscough. It’s not easy is it!
