There are some births in the right time frame which could connect to Robert.
There is these entries in the 1841 and 1851 censuses:
Alexr Housler 35 Woollen H L W J (initials stand for hand loom weaver, j likely for journeyman)
Janet Housler 40
Alexr Housler 10
Jas Housler 8
David Housler 6
Address: Nether Row, Alva Stirlingshire
And 1851...
Alexander Hostler 45 Hand Loom Weaver (woolen) b. Kincardine, Perthshire
Janet Hostler 54 b. Alva, Stirlingshire
Alexander Hostler 20 b. Alva, Stirlingshire
James Hostler 18 b. Alva, Stirlingshire
David Hostler 15 b. Alva, Stirlingshire
William Wallace 25 visitor
William Mounk 21 visitor
Address: High Buckholm, Roxburghshire
Mother above looks to be a Janet Dawson.
There are index entries for a Robert being in the Merchant Navy Seamen Records which connect to those found by Garstonite.
The big problem is that I cannot find a reference to a suitable Robert, using wildcards for spelling of surname, in either 1841 and 1851. Maybe at sea if the merchant service records connect to him?

I see from online trees that some of the info we have has already been confirmed. Wife was a Janet Anderson and some of their children were born in Scotland before they headed off to NSW.
Original image for his 1849 Mate's Certificate of Service showed that he had been in the merchant service for at least 15 years. Explains why he doesn't show on the censuses before his departure likely.
His wife looks to be living by herself in 1851:
Janet Houshar 21 tailor's wife b. Tulliallan (a/try transcript..likely sailor's wife ::))
Address: Mercer St, Kincardine
