I have a marriage of Moses William Hodgekiss born circa 1868 Poplar, died 1939
to
Elizabeth Ann Mitchell born 1871 Custom House
marriage date 06/08/1893
at St Luke Victoria Docks
1939 Elizabeth Ann Mitchell married Patrick H Kelly
I had a full sub to SEAX last year when I was doing a family tree for a friends 70th birthday, and I know I saw this marriage but stupidly I forgot to take a copy
If anyone would like to help me I would be very appreciative, I would like the other details from this entry please
I cannot find either of these on the 1901 census and it looks as if by 1911 they were living apart
Any help as I said, much appreciated

Hi Louisa
Just checking - it’s the 1893 marriage you want, isn’t it?
-
1939 Elizabeth Ann Mitchell married Patrick H Kelly
She remarried as Elizabeth Ann Hodgekiss March qtr 1939 Moses died same qtr so at 68yrs old she didn't hang around ;D Suspect she was with Kelly long before Moses died
-
Probate says: Moses William Hodgekiss died 4 Feb 1939, of 35 Leyes Road Custom House London E16, at whips cross hospital. £24 left to Susannah Maria Pratt widow. Certainly no mention of Elizabeth Ann.
-
Look for Moses in millwall in 1911. Mrs Pratt is his ‘housekeeper’ and is 54.
-
Yes, the the marriage marriage took place on
date 06/08/1893
at St Luke Victoria Docks, I stupidly didn't take down the other details from the cert
Thank you for your replies

Moses william of 14 Custom Street, aged 26, batchelor, boiler maker, Father Moses william, also boiler maker.
Elizabeth Ann, aged 22, 8 Gregory Road, spinster, Father George William Mitchell, engine driver.
Both signed. Witnesses: David Abraham Hodgekiss and Mary Ann Elizabeth Perrott.
By banns.
Interestingly, 7 other couples married on the same day!
-
Moses’ mother Jane was previously married aged 16 to a John Bruce!
-
I think so to above anyway, as there are Bruce children living with Moses and Jane once Moses junior and his siblings are born. They are son of wife etc.
-
Huge thank you to all your replies, sorry for the late contact but I have been out most of the day
Yes, this is my man, I have come to the conclusion they conveniently missed the 1901 census when they should have been together
I am now going to consider this completed, with thanks

This is very strange
RG13/1580 FOLIO 75 PAGE 45
31 Custom St
1901 Moses W Ascot aged 39 boarder NK against where born and occupation a boiler maker,
(so was Moses Hodgekiss)
Upon marriage Moses Hodgekiss states his address as 14 Custom Street and occupation boiler maker, custom Street used on marriage
No sign of Elizabeth Ann Hodgekiss, MMN Mitchell
I am completely flummoxed
Is this him?
Louisa Maud

I am really flummoxed now
1901 REF RG13/347 FOLIO 11 PAGE 13
Elizabeth A Kelly aged 29 wife married born Poplar, alone,
I have her marriage to Moses Hodgekiss 1893
I don't know what to think now
Louisa Maud

She’s in a big house with a big family and the mother of the head of house. Looks like a lodger?
Need to find mr Kelly in 1901!
Also, the marriage cert is definitely going to be needed.
Also she’s in Bromley, which is where Moses was in 1911?
-
There’s an Elizabeth meakins marries a Thomas Kelley in 1891 in tower hamlets This Elizabeth is born 1872.
Maybe just a red herring.
-
Meanwhile Susannah Pratt looks like she's going by the name Susan Hodgkiss in 1939, living in Leyes Road, widow
-
Yes Leyes Road was their address
My relative in Canada is going to buy the 1939 cert, takes about 6 weeks plus postage time, so it will be a time before we get anything concrete

Nanny J
1901 shows Thomas Kelly and Elizabeth in Jersey Street Bethnal Green
upon marriage 1891 Thomas was a shoemaker, 1901 Boot laster, so Elizabeth A Kelly found on 1901 is alone, 1901 REF RG13/347 FOLIO 11 PAGE 13
So it goes on, pity it is such a long wait till the marriage 1939 is received
I did consider going to Essex record office but I don't somehow think 1939 marriage was a church marriage and I could waste a whole day, of course I stand to be corrected to see when it arrives
Moses Ascot, there doesn't seem to be another by that name so I am wondering if he is my Moses Hodgekiss on 1901 who chose to use a different name, perhaps he worked for the Ascot company and was known by that name, he has NK written about place of birth when he clearly does know according to other census
I do appreciate all the help I have been given

Which registration district is the marriage and most likely parishes? I'm no good at understanding guessing parishes by the numbers on the reference. I'll try looking it up. At least if it's not there, you'll know it is a registry office.
-
Their address at at 1939 was 67 Mortlake Road, I think it might come under Custom House.
Nanny J , it is a big ask and nice of you to offer to be honest, West Ham, Canning Town and Custom House have quite a few churches, I don't want you to spend to much time on my behalf but a nice gesture
I think Custom House and Canning Town are the best bets, it would be a church of England not Baptist or Methodist churches, I do feel under the circumstances it might be a register office as they were probably well known in the area having lived there for so many years
Poor Moses died on 4th Feb, I would assume the marriage would be after that as Elizabeth was free
She should be Elizabeth Hodgekiss, father George Mitchell, dec.
HUGE thank you
Louisa Maud
-
Nothing in custom house or Canning Town. Will have a look at West Ham later.
-
You are very kind Nanny J, thank you

I am really sorry folks, I previously put this on Rootschat in 2015, I had forgotten, but this cert received proves as sometime before 1935 Elizabeth must have been living with Patrick, E.Kelly is informant on her mother's death cert
"Elizabeth's mother has E. Kelly daughter as her informant on her death cert received today, so Elizabeth Ann Mitchell married Moses Hodgekiss and then must have left him for Patrick Kelly whom it looks as if she married some years after this certificate"
Louisa Maud

Hi Folks
Finally I have seen the certificate that arrived this week to prove the marriage of
Patrick Henry Kelly
to
Elizabeth Ann Hodgekiss
11/03/1939
West Ham register office
Huge thank you for all the help given to me, it has all been solved now
Happy Hunting
