Hi,
I've traced my family on back to this man.
Peter McDermott. he was born in Roscommon in 1833. But after that I'm stumped, needle in a haystack.
Can anyone point me in any direction on how to move further back?
Thanks

Hello and welcome :)
It would help if you gave more information. Which records show his place and year of birth for example.
Did he marry? Does the marriage give his father’s name?
What religious denomination was he?
Heywood

That would make him around 105 when he died?
-
Was this his death in 1938? https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1938/04768/4278512.pdf

It may be the same Peter who is the father of the subject in this topic

StuMacke, it really helps if you post what you already have with relevant details.
If this is the right Peter he is here:
1861 1097/111/16
Colchester Barracks
Peter McDermott 28 yrs Sergeant Army b Ireland
Ellen McDermott 21 yrs b Ireland
1881 505/154/17
Peter and Ellen with a large family living in Poplar
1891 1326 /131
West Ham
Peter b ‘Stokestown’ - presumably Strokestown
1901 still living in West Ham b Ireland
I was going to wait until OP comes back but I don’t want you to waste your time Maiden Stone searching in Ireland. :)

In view of his advanced age he may have slept his way into the next world.
I was going to ask which war but Heywood has supplied info.
Thanks for your post, Heywood. I will cease poking haystacks in Roscommon. :)
The Peter whose death I posted in reply #6 died of "senile decay", as did most of the others on same page. They lived to a great age in that district.
Peter's age recorded at registration may have been an estimate by his nephew.

I was a bit unsure how this worked, and what to post and how helpful you guys would be, and didn't want to seem like I just wanted other people to do the work for me.
You guys have been really helpful so far, thanks to the GRO tip I've found the birth certificate of his daughter which may point me to the missing line of my family
You guys have been so helpful. Its amazing really

A quick question, thanks to all the help on here, I have managed to find the parish records for Peter, but I'm finding it hard to translate the scans. To me it's illegible, is there a transcript service out there?
