Hello,
I was wondering if any one could help me please? I am trying to identify John's parents, in the 1851 census he is with Wife Mary and Son William. Piece 1730 Folio 453 Page number.
He gives his pob as Chosewell but this place does not seem to exist.
There are 3 John Steptoes born in Berks on Ancestry but from experience I know this site does not list all parish registers.
2 are born at Thatcham and Sunningwell and appear at these localities in 1751 which leaves the one born at Chieveley unaccounted for. Could this be my John Steptoe that gave his place of birth as Chosewell in 1851 or was there once a place called chosewell and that baptism is not on ancestry.
Mary and John's daughter Lidia goes on to marry Richard Hutt in Kidlington in 1845 and she lives at Cutslowe Farm which is in an extraparochial area, I am not sure if this is relevant.

Ahh that is great thank you and so close to a possible baptism too.
My John Steptoe ("Chosewell") is with his wife Mary and Son William at Water Eaton in 1851. There is another John Steptoe who gives his place of birth as Sunningwell and is married to Ann and lives in Croydon. Do you happen to know if there are 2 John Steptoes baptised in Sunningwell within a close timeframe please?

In the '41 Census, John Steptoe of Water Eaton, Kidlington, is shown as "born in County" ie. Oxfordshire.

Yes, I noticed that, I wish I could find them with certainty in 1861/71 if still alive (I think he dies 1877 Thrupp which is just up the road). He is so hard to trace as I wanted to verify his parents but I would be guessing. The Sunningwell and Thatcham John Steptoes turn up elsewhere in 1851. He married in 1819, the 1803 John baptised in Chieveley died and the 1805 one would only be 14 when he married. I am not sure that I will get back further with this one! Thanks for your help :)

A check of FindMyPast confirms that the 1861 Water Eaton, Woodstock Registration area Census records are "missing in their entirety".
A large part of the Woodstock Registration area Census is missing.

This gives a birth year of 1793.
The Mary with John Steptoe at Water Eaton is 45 (born 1792-1796) on the '41 Census and 52 (born 1799) on the 1851 Census.

A large part of the Woodstock Registration area Census is missing.
Thank you very much, that is good to know as other branches of the family are based there and are untraceable in 1861.

That is great thank you very much. I now believe that Mary Steptoe' s Maiden name is gardener and it fits with a Mary Gardener baptised Charlbury 1793.
