Hi folks, I need help from one or more of the skilful restorers on this Forum. I just don't have the capabilities to do much with this at all. This is the last pic we have of my wife's grandfather - he lived to 95, but this one was taken at age 80.
My original is only 43x60mm - it looks like it may have been cut from a larger photo. I have scanned it at 1200x1200 and have not fiddled with any of the image adjustment settings on my scanner (fading, grain, dust, unsharp mask etc).
Any restores will be much appreciated. And if I can do anything more with the scanning process to make it easier for you, please let me know.

I think this has been in an album which sticky lines on it hasn't it?
I didn't like to get rid of the lines on his face (and I don't know how without flattening his face too much) - takes away too much of his 'character'. ;)
Doing very well for 80 isn't he! :)

Thanks very much John and Wiggy. I really appreciate the time and effort you put in to get these enhanced outcomes. Very different results but both have certainly resulted in restores which are a substantial improvement on the original. ...Sel

And Wiggy, the photo was one one of about 150 which were stuck in a filing cabinet for about 30 years, and only recently surfaced. I think it had been sandwiched between folders which caused some of the degradation.
He lived to be 95, but this is the last pic we have of him. He certainly had a full life. Thanks again. ..... Sel

I want to know what the thing is just over his left shoulder - it looks like a fancy motorbike jacket . . . (. . or the back of a very decent sized lobster!! ) ;D ;D

Many thanks, Peter. Another great result - so much better than the one I had to start with.
Wiggy, on closer examination I think the 'thing over his left shoulder' is someone (probably his wife) standing behind him with her right hand in her cardigan pocket. The weave on the fabric upwards from her hand seems to be the same as that falling over his shoulder. As I mentioned in the initial post, I think the small pic I have has been cut from a larger one. We can only speculate on why he would cut her out of the photo!

I've got a new monitor with Low Blue Light to try and help my eyes.
So I'm never sure what you see on your standard monitors. That's my excuse
so I'm now going to raise my fee for being nice to you on RootsChat.

Crikey! I wake up and find three new restores - thank you eglejok, Gadget and John-76 for your great work. I certainly have a wonderful selection of the 'new' Alfred to include in the family history photo book on his life I am putting together.
This is such a brilliant forum. All restorers learning from and enjoying each other’s work. What a fantastic contribution you all make to family history researchers who just don’t have the skills to do what you do. Turning old, degraded photos into revived, living memories - it’s pretty special!
