Title: Old Bate Hall nn Macclesfield
Post by: Michaela Bowden on Sunday 28 April 19 18:04 BST (UK)
Hi guys,
I'm in need of a much help as possible, I'm trying to trace as much information as possible about the hall, it was originally home of Stopford family, there was a number of outer buildings which in time was demolished,  I do have Hannah Mottershead 1887
Whom was a tenant,
1896, sold by John Simpson husband of Millicent Simpson to william archer Smith, it's noted that Charlie Roe and his family where tenants.
I'm looking for any information about the coming and going of this building and deaths accidents , it is noted to of been used as a courtroom were a lady was tried and executed by hanging in the inn. This I can't find no evidence of such ever , it's also said that lady Alice Stopford was killed just outside the building from being thrown from a carriage but again she died in ireland,  any help in able to put some of these stories to rest would be great help.

Hello Michaela and welcome to rootschat.

There are a few mentions of the Hall in newspapers of the day. One notable case where a woman named Mina JURY was convicted of stealing from Peter SIMPSON of Bate Hall in 1874. She is described as quite notorious - I can transcribe some articles if you haven't seen them.  :)

However, I can't find any mention of the incidents you describe.

Sorry I have been away from my computer for a few days. Here are some items for you.  :) Actually, I've tried to attach a few newspaper articles for you, however the files are really too big, it might be easier if you private message me your email address and I could email them to you?

Also, if you don't already have them -  a link to "The peerage of Ireland" published 1789 which lists Bate Hall as a seat of James STOPFORD (and info about his family).

You can also see some mentions of Bate Hall here (published 1850)

I find the search on this web page a little clunky, but from what I can see it mentions Bate Hall on page 206
"Bate Hall was anciently the seat of the Earl of Courtowne, it has long been occupied as a public house."

and page 241 listing it under Hotels, Inns and Taverns:
"Bate Hall, Hannah Moseley, Chestergt"

page 247 under Carriers from the Inns:
"To Knutsford - Mary Wright from the Bate Hall, every Tuesday and Friday"
