I have two conflicting sources of info for an immigration from UK to Canada , and would be grateful if anyone could confirm which might be the correct one. A romantic story ! JOHN LAMB and CATHERINE JONES who eventually went to Etobicoke in Ontario. John from Yorkshire UK was born 1867, but gave birthdate 1865 so he could marry (as being over 21yrs) ; he kept this date for the rest of his life. I do have his birth and baptism in UK. (my gt granduncle) John married Catherine Jones from Wales and they met on board ship (I presume) I was advised of one voyage on SS British Queen from Liverpool, arriving NYork 1/8/87. Recently I have been given another voyage for John Lamb in 1887 on SS Sarnia arriving Halifax N Scotia . Not sure which is correct
Would be most grateful if anyone could find John Lamb and Catherine Jones -thank you

This looks like notes connected to a passenger list.....
A John Lamb arrived Halifax 27 Jan 1887 from Liverpool on the S S Sarnia. A farm hand. Sent to Toronto.
This info would tie in with what is known about John from Ontario records so perhaps this is him?
As pointed out earlier by *Sandra*, Catherine apparently arrived a couple of years before John did.
PB
Edited to add: the note doesn't give his age but his entry on the passenger list proper has his age as 20.

Hello Sandra and Polarbear, thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to find out all the info. I don't have worldwide ancestry or FindMyPast subscriptions just UK, and what you have found confirms and improves on the info I had. His father remarried (to my gt grandmother) and they subsequently had four more boys. John was the second son of the family and would not have taken over the farm and a new life in Canada would probably have appealed to him. Sadly my tale of a shipboard romance with Catherine doesn't agree with the evidence! Many thanks, Brenda

You can access images of the Canadian censuses for free at this link to Library and Archives Canada....

The https://www.familysearch.org/en/ website will have free images of the marriage and should have death certs up to about 1940 or so, I believe.

Hello Polarbear, I have quite a few family members from East Lancashire and the Craven area of Yorkshire who migrated to Ontario and Manitoba in the nineteenth century, and can now look into their emigration and settlement in Canada. Ontario, especially, seemed to be the favourite place of settlement for these farming folks. The Canadian records give relatively upto date records for them. Many thanks for your help, much appreciated, Brenda

Thank you Sandra - interesting info about John's family. I am in contact with another family member (the granddaughter of his sister) who will like to know this also. I am pretty sure that no-one in the Lamb family in the UK knew what finally happened to John, and about his sons. He was left £500 in the will of his father in 1901, but don't know whether or not this would get to him. Kind regards, Brenda
