Title: Switzerland- MAry Lenzie - bn 1856
Post by: JDC on Monday 29 April 19 22:05 BST (UK)
Good afternoon everyone,

I have been attempting for a while now to find the birth record of my g-grandmother who was born in Switzerland - at least according to her Canadian marriage document. According to that document she married my German g-grand father Charles Coy in 1876 in Hamilton Ontario Canada. Her parents were named in this document as Ignatius and Martina Lenzie ( I am dont know if Mary came to Canada alone or with her parents - I have no evidence for either place).

I have been looking for her birth record to confirm her birth info as well as who her parents (and possibly where they resided). Unfortunately I have hit the brick wall. If anyone can help with confirming these two things it would be greatly appreciated. I am at a loss as to where this info is hiding.

Cheers and thx in advance,

JDC

all the surnames on Familysearch for Lenzie in Switzerland- are Lenzi - without the e on the end - so have a trawl through these and see if anything catches your attention

According to the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland database http://www.hls-dhs-dss.ch/famn/index.php the place of origin for Lenzi is    Gipf-Oberfrick in canton Aargau. You should contact the civil records office, but it seems the registers may have been filmed by FHL see here for info on this http://kunden.eye.ch/swissgen/kant/agallg-e.htm, scroll down to Genealogical Information. This page also has a lot that may help you.
Good luck
Paul

The name in the marriage register is Lenze, not Lenzie.

The surnames register has Lenze in Frick which is next to Gipf-Oberfrick AG

Hi folks,

Hi folks,

I looked again, you are right about the spelling of her surname, although it could be a bad i at the end. Her name is spelt different ways in various documents unfortunately :-(

I looked at a map on google as to where Gipf-Oberfrick is located and it appears that this place in a little north east of Berne. It also appears to be located within the water system  to Karlsruhe German where her husband came from and was born. That makes me think they possibly know each other before coming to Canada? Family rumour has it they mat at the train station in Hamilton.

I think your supposition is very unlikely,
Have you checked passenger lists?

Lets us know in due course how you get on with some original source research.

Hi

I'm surprised that you are still searching for the same person. You asked me some years ago and I thought that she came from the Fricktal, maybe from Gipf-Oberfrick, Canton Aargau. I also sent you a link to the archives where you should find her birth record (but they are still not online). It is important to know if she was of roman catholic or evangelic religion (the Fricktal was roman catholic).

Here is a link to the list of the parishes of which they have churchbooks in their archives

No. About 80km apart, unless you think thatís near!

Also, please note that Bern is also a Canton (Federal State) as well as a city. So the geographical area is much larger. She may well have been born in Canton Bern, but her civil registration will be held in the Aargau archives. See Svenjaís links above, as well as understanding how Swiss civil registration works via the link I posted earlier.

Your next step is to contact Aargau archives. They should cope with an enquiry in English if you have no German.
