I am looking for any information about my great great great grandmothers family.
She was born Sarah Lydia Toleman and all I can find out about her is parents were called James and Sarah Toleman.
Sarah Lydia Toleman married Duncan Mc Ara in 1838 she then married my great great great grandfather William James Powell ( 1798 1862) in 1849.
In 1862 she was living at 1 Oxford Street London
Any information about her would be greatly appreciated.
-
What’s her birthplace according to the censuses?
I see that her 1838 marriage took place in the City of London.
-
Shoreditch ,Middlesex
-
She was a minor, of 1 St Martin’s Lane, when she married Duncan McAra at Christ Church, Newgate St, London on 27 July 1838 - father James Toleman, a “taylor” (tailor).
Witnesses: Richard Dubery and Matilda Knight - have they been traced?
-
It looks likely she had a brother James Toleman, a tailor like his father, who married also at Christ Church Newgate St in 1832, to Mary Ann Charlotte Millward.
-
Sarah Lydia Toleman was born 28 May 1820 and baptised 26 June 1824 at St Leonard, Shoreditch.
Parents: James (a tailor) and Sarah, of Myrtle St.
Also baptised same day, same place, same parents: Mary Hill Toleman, born 26 August 1822.

Mary H Toleman, a domestic servant from Middlesex, emigrated to Melbourne on the Tudor, arriving 30 December 1854. As Mary Hill Toleman she married there, to Benjamin Dyer, in 1869, and died as Mary Hill Dyer in Essendon, Victoria in 1917.
Parents named on her death registration as James William Toleman and Sarah Lydia née Corrick.

Thank you for all your efforts,if anything about Jame Toleman pops up would you let me know please.

Mmm...I was wondering about that entry as I’d seen GRO birth indexes for an Elizabeth 1839 & James 1841 mn Underwood
James baptism just has mother’s name as Mary - can’t find Elizabeth - did James remarry and have a change of occupation
-
When James married Mary in 1832 he was recorded as a bachelor.
So perhaps he is the (much) older brother of Sarah Lydia b 1820 - if so, effectively a generation older.
-
Could this be a possible remarriage for James both are widowed

No age given on either m/c so wondering is this Duncan Mc ARA Jnr.'s father? :-\
Signatures looks very similar
1843 marriage to Jane Tidey
Duncan Mc ARA f/a widow occ Tailor father Duncan Mc Ara occ Tailor
I can’t find Duncan & Jane on the 1851 census to confirm age & pob etc....
Trying to see if I can find a link with the James Toleman, Tailor bn Somerset c1796
on the 1841/1851 census.
Originally thought perhaps James bn1796 might be Sarah Lydia's Uncle but that would mean that two brothers were named James ???
Any idea of the maiden name of Sarah Lydia Toleman’s mother Sarah or any siblings?
Is there a connection to the Toleman's in Somerset ?
Could either of these be Sarah's parents marriage?
