Title: Family Tree Maker 2017
Post by: barkbythorpe on Thursday 02 May 19 09:35 BST (UK)
Hi
Have been using McKieve Family Tree Maker software for a number of years and been happy with the product for my family history research. The only downside I think is that it syncs with Ancestry online tree which is not a problem but you cant access the media files such as documents and pictures etc without an Ancestry subscription which limits the information you can share with family and friends? Sharing gedcoms to other online trees is much the same with only text being shared! My question is, does anybody know if Family Tree Maker data exports (not gedcoms) are supported by any other online trees. I know its possible to manually export items to other trees but this is very time consuming

Hi barkbythorp,

My understanding is, no.

FTM was written to sync with Ancestry and no other. At least that is what  McKieve say and they should know.

Sorry

Regards

Chas

Try this, download a document from Ancestry and save to your PC. I have a master folder called 'Copy documents' and then sub-folders for baptisms, marriages, wills, etc.

Find the individual in FTM, click on the person tab and then click the media tab an the bottom of the page. You can then add new media to the person.

In the main media screen you can allocate media to groups, eg baptisms, marriages, wills, etc. Some already exist but you can create more.

What I cannot work out is how to link a document to an event starting in FTM and how anyone would know that a document is linked to a person in the Ancestry tree, mine is private so not easy to test.

It seems that you can add media to a source citation.

All from FTM, so in theory, create a new source, eg baptism of Fred Bloggs.

Add the media the source, create the event and add the source to the event.

Cheers for that Edward
Correct me if Im wrong? Am I correct in thinking that Ancestry ONLINE will not show the media without a subscription if it thinks its been obtained through them? Am I also correct in thinking that what we are trying to do here is fool it into thinking the media has been sourced from elsewhere (eg FindMyPast or some other alternative source) in which case the media files will be displayed in the ONLINE tree?
I was originally thinking more along the lines of starting up an alternative ONLINE tree, importing the gedcom and then manually adding all the media but if its a large tree as mine its quite a task but your method is certainly worth a thought!

Many thanks

Regards

Mick

I would not be surprised with your suggestion. I have data & sources from all over the place and have never linked Ancestry ones direct to my tree, theirs (like others) are all added manually.

I tried adding a modifying a couple of sources with images, synchronised and now waiting for Ancestry to catch up.

I think you will have to try different methods to find out what will work best for you & your family.

Thanks for your input Edward
I really do appreciate it and will consider your suggestions
MANY THANKS AGAIN
I will also await any further suggestions then have a think how to progress
I really do like FTM 2017 as a stand alone piece of software for assembling FAMILY HISTORY research and syncing to ANCESTRY ONLINE is great but its a bit of a sprat to catch a mackeral in that for the Ancestry ONLINE tree to be of any use in sharing your research with family and friends you need an Ancestry subscription which isn't cheap?

Yes, have just received the same.....£29.95 introductory offer for an early take up of the upgrade......looks a worthwhile upgrade with a number of cloud based services added which look very useful including a FTM CONNECT service which allows family and friends to view your tree including all the media and record sources for free for the first year then a small annual charge after

I have also received the upgrade information.  I had a subscription to FTM, but about 12 months ago my computer crashed and although I had a backup copy of my family tree, I lost all the FTM program files.  I am wondering if I bought this upgrade, would I be able to install it successfully when I have none of the original FTM program files?

I thought the offer seems fair but wondered if anyone else had heard anything!

I am afraid I cannot answer your question, hopefully some else can, or you could contact them?

I have ordered it, but when ordering, I was put through the usual "would you like this as well. etc, etc, etc" The usual extras would certainly run the cost of the upgrade up if you were to purchase some, or all of them.

Me, I am a grippy Aberdonian, so only paid for the basics. I will just have to wait now, and see what materialises in the Summer time.

I did contact their support this morning regarding whether the CONNECT SERVICE would display the MEDIA content (record sources, documents pictures etc) in a tree, a flaw with the current syncing to the ANCESTRY ONLINE TREE if you haven't got a subscription, and they said that you can access ALL the content in a tree on their new service...the CLOUD BASED SERVICES look worth the UPGRADE on their own if that's the case.....I have signed up although I don't like this cheaper introductory offer...….puts you under a bit of pressure to buy...….fingers crossed...…….have been happy with FTM and previous versions when they finally got it up and running

The problem is, with the new 2019 update, and possibly future ones, how long will the 2017 version be supported?

This is what concerns me as well, though my live chat session today with them they said there is a patch coming to FTM2017 just after FTM2019 is released with bug fixes.

I'm more annoyed that a feature (FamilySearch Historical Record hints) advertised on their website as "coming soon" for over 2 years is now going to be only it seems in the 2019 version of which you have to upgrade to get.

Hi

I have FTM 2017. I have purchased previously as an upgrade from 2014. I didn't get Family search hints to start with but at some point they just started to appear alongside Ancestry hints. Beware though because most of the hints are just submitted by their members.

Hello Sheila, yes they released an update that only shows hints from FamilySearch's user submitted tree's which as we all know many are unreliable. The items that were promised and now in the 2019 version are record hints. For example parish records, census' etc. of which aren't currently and possibly will never be part if the 2017 version FamilySearch hint system.

I am confused. I pre-ordered the 2019 version months ago (15 May 2019) at the price of £29:95. I now get an e-mail asking for £49:95. What happened to the £29:95 version?

I reckon that was an introduction to the fact that at long last the update is ready for release. The 2019 update link for us prepaid lot should be with us shortly...……..Hopefully
