Title: Burgoyne/Burgoine/Burgoin/Burgin family - Stokenham, Devon
Post by: mrsksp on Friday 03 May 19 13:12 BST (UK)
Hello
Looking to find information on a William Burgin, think he was born around 1700 in area of Stokenham, Devon.  Believe he had a number of children, one being Samuel Burgin bap 16.02.1727 in Stokenham.
At some point he and his family migrated to Heanor in Derbyshire.

My initial ancestor had the name Burgoyne, but there are various spellings of the name as I have worked through various records.
Any help or information would be appreciated.

Hello.
Find My Past has Devon parish registers.  Your Samuel's baptism states his mother's name is Anne.  As far as I can see William & Anne's eldest child William was baptised in 1721 and their youngest one (in Stokenham) was Richard baptised in 1738. I have searched for a marriage 1710 plus/minus 20 years in the Devon parish records, of a William Burgin (plus varients) to an Ann(e) but this produces nil good matches. I have not restricted my search to Stokenham as it is entirely possible they married in a different parish.  The only thing I stumbled across was a baptism for a William Burgoyne 24 Oct 1701 in Exeter Cathedral.  He was the son of William Burgoyne (no mother mentioned).  I presume you may already know some or all of this but if you want copies of the entries in the PRs let me know.

I don't know if you are aware of this website: http://www.foda.org.uk/main/projects/eighteenthcentury/stokenham.htm
Some of your Burgin ancestors are listed her as taxpayers and oath takers. Some are mentioned as in the Malitia.

Kind regards, Lesley

Hello
Thank you for suggestions and information.
I have a copy of Samuel Burgin's baptism transcription which gives date as 16.02.1726 - Anglican.
Parents: William and Anne.  Baptism took place in Stokenham, Devon, so rightly or wrongly I made an assumption that Samuel's parents; or certainly one of them came from around Stokenham.
Then;
I came across a William Burgin and Anne Standford who were married on 6th Feb 1720 at St Giles, Cripplegate, London.  Anne Standford was bap 8th July 1698 at Southwick, Hampshire.
London/Southwick seem a long way from Stokenham though!! and I have no evidence to tie all of them together as a family.
I found another child: Thomas Burgain 12.04.1741 who I think also belongs to William and Anne.

I have copies of St Michael and All Angels baptisms at Stokenham 1725-1812 which covers most of the children.  I also have a copy of the Oath-takers and tax-payers in Georgian Stokenham, but will look at the website you suggest.

Many thanks

Hello again.  I meant to say that I think your query may be too complex for the FH Beginners Board.  Why not try posting on the county board for Devon.  Go to Forums and scroll down to England, then click on Devon. There are a couple of sub boards that might be of interest to you - one is for requesting look ups and the other is for Resources & Offers.  Good Luck.
Lesley
