Hi
Can SKS help, please?
Trying to make a trace on James Butterfield, who migrated to Perth, Australia in the early 1900's. He sailed there with his wife, Martha and daughter, Alice. I am of the opinion that they emigrated in order for James to take up a position of establishing a police force there. He had retired from the Metropolitan Police. Thereafter, I have no trace on this family.

Hi cumbria nige,
Here is W.A. BDM https://www.bdm.justice.wa.gov.au/_apps/pioneersindex/default.aspx and there is no record of James or Martha dying there.
Here is a history of the Western Australian police force and their commissioners
https://www.police.wa.gov.au/About-Us/Our-History/WA-Police-Commissioners and there is no mention of a Butterfield.
I think they must have travelled to another state ... will keep looking.

Could you give us a few more details - date of birth and parents' names please.

James was born abt 1852 in the St Geo Hanover district. Martha in abt 1825 in Lambeth and Alice (could be Alice Belissa) in 1863 in Rotherhithe

Something is not quite right. James born about 1852 is unlikely to be the father of Alice born in 1863.
Please check :D

Apologises. I wrote down the incorrect details when copying and realised before you posted. The family name was Mellish. George (b.1849 in Shoreditch). Harriet (b.1867 in Lewisham) and Edith (b.1883, not known where)

It actually says...... accompanied by Mrs and Miss Mellish....
I think Edith took a trip to England perhaps to visit family.
Edith Savage
Age 53
Birth Date abt 1882
Port of Departure Brisbane, Australia
Arrival Date 7 Nov 1935
Port of Arrival London, England
Ship Baradine
Intended address 53 Grosvenor Rd. Ilford Essex.
There was an Amy MELLISH who married in 1904. Possibly Edith's sister born 1879.
Marriage
Marriages Sep 1905
MELLISH Amy
SUMNER Chauncey Hugh
W. Ham 4a 538
This couple appear on the following census without children.
Ilford, Essex was the area where the SUMNER couple lived and Amy remained in that area it seems though I am not sure the couple remained together.
Information around late 1930's has them living at different addresses and the National Probate Calendar shows Chauncy's estate favoured someone other than Amy. 8)
Edith's brother Ernest MELLISH (b. 1878) is also recorded in the late 1930's with a family.

The M MELLISH aged 16 is a bit confusing.
A newspaper clip listing the passengers arriving per OMRAH 1902 shows
Mr and Mrs G. Mellish, Miss F MELLISH and Miss E MELLISH.
Ages are not mentioned .
The listing for the return voyage to England in 1904 per Orotava shows
Mr Geo MELLISH
Mrs MELLISH
Miss MELLISH aged 29
Aged 29 would make her Flora MELLISH born 1874/5

Thanks and again, apologises. I really messed up with this posting for help. Indeed, the family group that I am interested is searching for is the MELLISH one. I had thought that George and Harriet had travelled with one of their daughters but it looks as though 2 of them went with them, namely Amy and Edith. I would appeal for further help in making any trace of them after they emigrated. Thankyou
-
The reference of their return voyage is likely to be making reference to their daughter Florence, b. Croydon 1874 (Mar 1874 Croydon 2a 239)
-
I found other messages on this site which gave me details of the deaths of Edith's children. It looks as though most of them died in infancy

In scrolling through newspaper articles and other material available online, there is reference to 'George Mellish, appointed by Hare (A police commissionar) to head the local (meaning in Perth) C.I.B.' and that he retired ahead of completing his 5 year appointment before returning to England in 1904

Don't worry about the mess up with dates etc.. It often happens and is sorted now ;D
If you think it is AMY and EDITH who travelled to Australia with them, Why is it F MELLISH arriving.
Edith married here and the other returned with her parents.

The obit for William Arthur SAVAGE says that he leaves a widow and 11 children in 1952. It lists most of them. I posted details of some of their weddings and world war 2 service etc. They did NOT die in infancy. Have a read through the posts and click on the links. Just take it slowly ... :)
