Title: Highland & Island Emigration Society Records - free on Scotlands People.
Post by: mclachlan on Sunday 05 May 19 01:16 BST (UK)
Apologies if this has already been mentioned but I only discovered this for myself today!  Scotlands People now has records of families who departed the islands and highlands for Australia between 1852-1857.  These are free to search and view (with registration).  This is a great resource for possibly finding missing ancestors from those parts of Scotland!
Regards
Andrea

Not sure how long this has been available but I noticed it a while ago & was surprised to see 'FREE' although it seems (to me) to be a good work in progress (I hope)  ;D

Not complaining but I found the options rather strange to work with had I not known rough facts already.

There are many I know to have emigrated early 1850s not listed i.e. I don't think it's anywhere near completion but none-the-less a great source & hoping/looking forward to additions.

Annie

Hi Annie,
I believe it's been available since February this year (must have missed it!).  I also hope that it's a work in progress and that because it falls under the heading of 'Poor relief and Migration records', that the poor relief records will also be added one day! ;D ;D

The Tasmanian Archives also has some information as well.

I’m searching for information about one of my ancestors who emigrated from Scotland in 1856 bound for Tasmania on the ‘Broomielaw’. John McArthur bC1828.  I have info about estimated year of birth and his marriage, but can’t seem to go back any further to see where he was born. Both my mum and I have been searching for additional information to try and track them down.

I noticed this evening on a post I found the emigrants had to apply for passage to Tasmania - St Andrews Immigrations Society. In the post it mentioned an advertisement in the Glasgow Courier 4th Dec 1856 seeking applicants. Applicants had to apply through Messrs. McNaughton and Cochrane 163 Ingram St Glasgow. My question is does anyone know if there are any records for McNaughton and Cochrane held anywhere - Scotland or elsewhere which may hold information on the applications. To leave Scotland they would’ve needed to provide details of who there were and where they were from.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Malcolm

Hi, To add to my son McArthurs1828, post.  We have a "For sale" Advertisement, plus a "Immigration to Tasmania", advertisement and the full Ships manifest. John McArthur and his wife Isabella Stevenson, were married 2 December 1856 at Cambuslang just prior to their embarkation on the Broomielaw as Bounty Immigrants.  The Broomielaw, left the Clyde, Glasgow 20 December, 1856 on her maiden voyage, after an eventful trip they arrived in Launceston, Tasmania, 31 March, 1856.

Malcolm has become familiarized with Scotland's People but so far without success.  I have previously had success on Rootschat with the wifes family, the Stevensons of Cambuslang, where the couple were married.   To date we havent had  any success other that the marriage certificate and the Tasmanian side that unfortunately, does not include any dates of birth or  birthplace for our John McArthur 1828.  On the certificate as 28 years of age.  Father Duncan McArthur and Margaret Smith.

We are hoping there was some detail in the records of the selection agents of the Immigrants to Tasmania. Such as names of someone back home in Scotland, to be in touch with in the case of emergency or death on board etc.

John and Isabellas sponser was Ronald Cameron Gunn from Tasmania.  Doesnt appear to be any records for him at the moment. He hired out the Immigrants to the Public.  John was a Ploughman and Isabella his wife.

Thanks for any help

I would like to add to my own post, that prior to marriage and immigranting to Tasmania in December 1856, John McArthur according to his marriage certificate was residing at Cathcart, then in Renfrewshire.  He was a Farm Servant.  His father Duncan McArthur was deceased by the 2 December.

Thanks

Ok,
So I want to say one moe thing. Malcolm, his father, brother and sister are all DNA tested.  His father has a 67 markers YDNA, with Family Tree DNA. His sister, autosomal with ancestry.com.  Mal is waiting on his Familytree DNA tests Big Y and his brother waiting on his 67 marker results as well. Aso far we have no McARthur result for their father.  However we do have  several McDonald/MacDonald, McNeil/McNeill, McMullin, Buie, Cameron, Campbell, Carmichael, Best, Woodruff, to name a few.

I was told these men are different branches of the same lineage of the McArthur family.  That  family surnames in the Scottish Highlands were named differently.  Can someone explain how that came about. Who was responsible for naming the families. We are hoping through Mals Big Y that we can narrow down some of those names.  I know there are a lot more name s in the lineages. We are p;art of the Arthur project on familytreedna, there are 39 McrArthur, Mals father doesnt match any of them and w have also joined other projects on familytreedna so we are trying anything and everything.

Thanks again
Edie (Orontes)

The use of surnames in the Highlands by ordinary folk is of fairly recent origin, the Anglicising of a people who used  Gaelic patronymics amongst themselves stemmed from the need to learn English to "get on in the world" or appear on a muster-roll, a rent-roll or a lease, not to mention a school-roll where the use of Gaelic was taboo.
The tenantry often took the name of their laird or indeed were compelled to in some instances, so trying to make sense of all this by resorting to DNA & no paper-trail to back it up, is something of a Sisyphean task.  ;D

Thought I'd ask if there's any 'Smith' in the DNA links?

McArthur may have been a 2nd marriage i.e. step-father?

What was Duncan's occ. on John's marriage?

Duncan is listed as deceased on John and Isabella’s marriage certificate. I haven’t been able to find any Smith’s in DNA links.

Duncan is listed as deceased on John and Isabella’s marriage certificate. I haven’t been able to find any Smith’s in DNA links.

A marriage usually gives the occ. of the deceased father?

Does the marriage state mother was Margaret McArthur M.S. Smith or just Margaret Smith?

Is it possible Margaret was not his mother, had his mother died when he was young?

Have you found the family on any census together to find out where he was born?
