Title: Acronyms
Post by: Alex Edge on Sunday 05 May 19 13:25 BST (UK)
I have First World War period Electoral Lists with two Absent Voters who were recorded as Privates in the 680th Ag. Co. and 433 Ag. Co. respectively.  Despite my best efforts I have been unable to find an explanation for "Ag.Co."   Can anyone help please?

"To help resolve the labour shortage lower grade soldiers were transferred to the new Labour Corps which included Agricultural Companies (AC) to manage those soldiers working on farms.......By November 1917 there were 837 soldiers allocated to agriculture in Surrey, a big improvement since March, resulting in the 680th and 694th ACs being formed at Guildford to share the administration with 425 AC."

Thank you for your response to my enquiry and the associated web site address.  I had no idea such things happened.  Total war in every respect.

Many thanks.
