Title: Martha Davies Born c 1862.
Post by: wrjones on Wednesday 08 May 19 11:56 BST (UK)
I have had a message from a friend on Facebook asking for my help in finding out some info about her Great-Grandmother.

From all known info she was born in Cefn Mawr Denbighshire in c 1862.She was to marry a Henry Edwards in 1886.The Marriage Certificate gives her Father to be an Edward Davies(Puddler). She dies in 1924.Lifespan therefore 1862-1924.

After a search myself there is no sighting for Martha on any Census before she is married.Neither is there any possible candidates for Father Edward on any Census.

Despite Davies being an obviously common local Surname, there is no possible Birth that I can find either.

Regards
William Russell Jones.

Go back to your friend, and get the rest of the information.
Eg where they wed.
What names witness

Were they consistent in census?
Where they lived, and with whom?

Kind of confusing but take a look at Edward PLATT and family (1881 census):

5514 /52/7

and then Edward DAVIES and family (1891 census):
4613 /125/10

Are they the same family??

well, both families have daughters Charlotte and Harriett of the same age so looks a distinct possibility.
1871 Charlotte is 7 weeks old, no matching Platt birth reg but there is a Charlotte Davies march qtr 1871 Wrexham vol 11b pg 335 mmn Roberts, more than one possible for Harriet with mmn Roberts and there's a Martha dec qtr 1863 Wrexham vol 11b pg 319 mmn Roberts.

Possible parish marriage from Ruabon parish church 18 April 1863
Edward Davies 23 bach forgeman Cefn Mawr father David forgeman
Mary Roberts 23 spin Cefn Mawr father John labourer
witnesses John Davies  & Mary Ann Jones all mark except Edward.

Many thanks both. The address in 1881 looks very interesting as Russell St in Cefn Mawr is where the Edwards family later lived in 1891 and 1901.The Marriage at Ruabon in 1863 is to be regarded as a probable too.

It is interesting indeed that Martha's mother was a Roberts as I looked at a Birth of a Martha Davies whose Mother's maiden name is given as Roberts.
