Title: Death aT Sea
Post by: ozranga on Friday 10 May 19 13:47 BST (UK)

The baby daughter of Michael & Ellen Head died at sea on the voyage of the Salisbury which departed Gravesend 21 Nov 1875, arriving Auckland 28 February 1876.
I have a news item from Papers Past, but cannot find a ships log or surgeons report.
Can anyone please advise how/where to find the record of her death, and her age.

There were several ships with the name SALISBURY around in 1876. An educated guess is this vessel. SALISBURY Official number 54670, Built in 1866, 1094 tons, owned by the Merchant Shipping Co. Ltd. Of 60 Gracechurch Street, London. Port of Registry London.
Her 1876 Logbook which would report all deaths on board, seems to have been lost or destroyed. It could be that she never returned to a UK port in 1876. In that case the outward voyage would be recorded in her first 1877 Logbook. Only  Crew Agreements for 1877 seem to have survived.
The Death should have been recorded and the information sent to the Register General of Shipping and Seamen, who in turn would pass on the information to GRO.
The Deaths at Sea records were published by the RGSS and are available on line via "find my past"
Papers  Past states from the Thames Advertiser Volumn IX, issue 2289, 29 Feb, 1876
"The "Salisbury" ship has arrived from London with 310 Government immigrants. She reports no sickness on board. Only a child of 9 months who died during  the voyage"
Later on  04/03/1876 it was reported that a case of Scarlet Fever had broken out  amongest the Salisbury immigrants and they have been isolated at the depot.

This snippet states "there was no sickness on the voyage"......

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/THD18760229.2.8?query=salisbury&page=8&start_date=02-02-1876&end_date=10-03-1876&snippet=true

[reply #2 states "the ship comes in without any sickness on board"]

Marriage and Mary's birth and baptism - the birth has a corrected error but it still has mother's name wrong:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1875/03097/2136028.pdf

The child's age at 9 months in the newspaper articles is correct, the manifest is wrong at 2/12.

BIG thank you to everyone for all your help. The conflicting ages of 9 months & 2 months was the problem & I had to be sure.
thanks again
