I've come across a bit of something that seems a little incongruous. I requested two birth certificates from the GRO. One was for an Augustus Samuel Cole and the other was for a Samuel Augustus Cole. The body of the certificates are the same other than the name. The date of birth, place of birth, the father, the mother date of registration and the name of the registrar. Other than the name, the only other difference is the certificate number - one is 354 and the other is 355.
Augustus Samuel died in 1927 in Leicestershire (and this is the correct one I believe), Samuel Augustus died in 1874 (it would appear, although I haven't actually sent for the certificate yet).
Has anyone else come across this apparent duality? Or anyone got any views before I send for the DC of Samuel Augustus.

Is the time of birth noted? If so, maybe they're twins?

Not necessarily. My gt-grandfather, born in 1839, was one of a pair of twins who both appeared in the 1841 and 1851 censuses. He was named Joseph William and his brother William Joseph. I have to assume that the parents were expecting only a single, and weren't ready with alternatives. WJ disappeared after that, while JW went to Ireland with the rest of them, and the rest is history.
Do your certs. show a time of birth - that may be an indication ?

Thanks chaps, I hadn't thought of twins. There is a time on both certificates, but it's difficult to make out. One of them looks like "10h, a, m" whilst the other looks like "10h, 15m by m". I think maybe twins is the answer, and that the one that has "15m" noted on it is possibly 15 minutes after the first - if that's possible.

I also have a set of twins in my family tree, called Rosetta Florence and Florence Rosetta.

Any twin birth certs I have seen have the time of birth on them, as well as the date.

354 and 355 will be the entry numbers in the register (not the certificate number), and as they are two seperate entries it can't be a correction - it is just a simple case of twins.

More than possible in my opinion. The reason is to allow for inheritance disputes if primogeniture is invoked - not likely in the lives of ordinary people. Some registrars entered times for many, even most, births, so it doesn't always indicate a twin.
