Hi,
I am trying to find any information in regard to Elsie Olive Willoughby (nee Goddard) b. 1896 at Reading Berkshire, who travelled between Canada and England during the years 1921 through to around 1962. We believe that her Mother also could have travelled with her, her name being Kate Thorn, and even her brother Henry (Harry) Goddard b. 1891, who had gone to Australia for a period of time, but we believe he also went to Canada. Elsie Willoughby was married to Alfred T Willoughby, and am not sure whether he travelled during these periods as well.
If anyone can assist me with information on this family,I will be very grateful, as I don't have access to any Ancestry records in Canada.

A quick search - on my phone - suggests Elsie travelled back and forth a few times. Hard to see the records on my phone but one i opened - arriving in Quebec on 23 July 1921 - she was with her husband and they were intending to buy a farm and settle in Vancouver. I’ll have a look at the other records later when i am on the computer (unless others get the info for you first).

Alfred, Elsie and a child Olive Victoria Willoughby aged 9, born Canada, sailed from Antwerp, Belgium, to Seattle (destination Vancouver) on the Abraham Lincoln arriving in Feb 1932.

Thank you so much for this, this Goddard family seem to be all over the place, and I need to get to the bottom of this, including the Henry or Harry Goddard who came to Australia and became a Pearler in Broome.
I have most information for him here, but need to connect up with any other information on his travels to and from UK, if maybe also via Canada.

Looking good Deirdre.

Other journeys....
She returned ‘home’ - to Canada - and again in July 1947 (via New York), and June 1949 (Montreal).
Elsie and Violet aged 2 sailed from Southampton to Montreal in Sept 1924
Alfred, Elsie and Violet arrived in Washington in July 1929
In April 1953 she sailed on the Mauretania from New York to Southampton (on her own)
In Sept 1962 she arrived in New York - on her own - in transit to Canada
I can’t immediately see any records for her mother but her year of birth might help in a search given her more common name than Elsie Olive :) The ones i found were all too young.
Sandra - amazing details you get online with a death certificate :)

Harry sailed from Sydney to Victoria, British Columbia, arriving in October 1926 (fare paid by his mother!). Destined for his mother - Mrs K Goddard - in Vancouver. He was a butcher and landed as an ‘immigrant’.
He left Montreal for Plymouth in July 1927, as a carpenter, stating last place of permanent residence as Australia.
-
Maureen,
Thank you, yes that is her death certificate, wrong maiden name, Willard, but close !

Deirdre, thank you that is absolutely great, confirms what I wanted to know. He changed his occupation each time he travelled. In Western Australia, his occupation was Pearler.

Deirdre,
Regarding date of birth of Elsie Olive Willoughby's Mother, it was Kate Goddard (nee Thorn) born 20.5.1864 Frimley, Surrey England.
Hope this assists.

I did look for Kate Goodard too following the travel of Harry but again nothing found. But if she was living in Vancouver she must have got there somehow so will look again. Elsie’s travel docs all refer to the same address in Reading so did her parents split up and that was the family home?
-
Hi Deirdre,
Yes, I am still looking at that, am not sure what happened there, strange happenings there with the family. We wonder why Harry Goddard changed his occupation, think he was running away from his responsibilities in Australia.
Jan

Sorry 10 Bulmershe Rd, Reading on a few, then in 1947.... 286 Henley Rd, Caversham, Reading
-
George and Kate Goddard left Southampton on 30 April 1926 for Montreal. Bulmershe Rd address given.
-
Following on from this, I have found that George Goddard died 7.4.1935 at Reading. I think maybe he and his wife Kate Goddard returned to England from Vancouver in 1926, not sure, most likely just visiting family.

Getting late here in Australia, may not answer, if any more questions posted, will check in the morning, thank you everyone so much, we are getting there now.

They returned from Montreal to Plymouth in November 1926

I guess you have this but just in case..... Harry and his mother were in Bulmershe Rd in 1939. Looks like Kate died and Harry married in March quarter 1953 in Reading and Harry died in 1964 (Wokingham).

I wonder if any of you ladies could give me details of the birth of their daughter Olive Violet Kate Willoughby, we think she was born in 1922 in Canada, not absolutely sure.
She did marry in Surrey UK later.

British Columbia birth records are released to the public after 120 years.
Prior to 2004, birth records were released after 100 years, so birth records up to and including 1903 are available. 1904 records, however, will not be released until 2025.
Sandra

That’s interesting, thanks Sandra.

Thank you Sandra, that's all good anyway, we know that she was born around 1922, that is fine, thank you for your acknowledgement anyway.

Not sure if this was recorded earlier but a UK Return Passenger List - New York to London - - arriving 22 April 1924 - Antonia - Violet Olive Willoughby - aged 2 year, Elsie Olive Willoughby aged 28 years going to 10 Bulmershe Road. Reading Berkshire. Country of last residence Canada. Intended living in other parts of the British Empire.
Sandra

Doh! Didn’t think of her uk death having her date of birth.
Re the 1924 passenger list, Elsie died in Canada so presumably changed her mind re moving ???

Re the 1924 passenger list, Elsie died in Canada so presumably changed her mind re moving ???
Intended living in other parts of the British Empire meant Canada. So Elsie intended returning to Canada.
The choices are England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Irish Free State, Foreign Countries or other parts of the British Empire.
Sandra

Thanks Sandra, that seemed confusing, given that her last place of residence was Canada. 🌺

Hi Deirdre,
Wondering if you can see any information about Harry Goddard's passport information, which might give me more clues for him in Australia.
Jan
Harry sailed from Sydney to Victoria, British Columbia, arriving in October 1926 (fare paid by his mother!). Destined for his mother - Mrs K Goddard - in Vancouver. He was a butcher and landed as an ‘immigrant’.
He left Montreal for Plymouth in July 1927, as a carpenter, stating last place of permanent residence as Australia.
-
It was only a passenger list i found and i included everything on the list in my post sorry. There is a tree on ancestry which gives some details including a daughter in Australia but I haven’t looked into that.

Deidre,
I have been drawing up my tree on Ancestry, (New/Thorn/Brindley) plus another cousin (New-Holland) doing the same, but we are still trying to confirm the correct details.
The only daughter that he would have had, was one in Western Australia, named Elsie Corpus and plus a Son Henry Corpus, who were illegitimate, (interesting though !! Elsie & Henry being Goddard family names) born to a Half Indigenous lady in Broome, W.Aust. where this Harry Goddard apparently was working as a Pearler on his own Lugger Boats, also being Licensee of the Dampier Hotel. He was a Butcher coming to Australia, then owned a Bakery in Broome, back to being a Butcher when he went to Canada, and then a Carpenter when he went back to UK. There he became Licensee at the Osborn Arms Hotel in Reading, Berkshire. Changed his occupation all the time.
We are trying to get all of the details together, as we have DNA matches with the grand-daughter of the partner of Harry Goddard (or Henry)
I think we have it right now, he must be the man responsible, we all needed the right information for closure. Thanks Deirdre.
-
Thank you so much JM
-
Thanks for the update Jan, interesting family research 😀
-
Deirdre, this has been the most amazing research, we have been down so many lines, but once we got the Court Records from Perth W.A. showing the name of the father, we were able to take it further.
Unfortunately, the record did not show the christian name, and there were two Goddards living in Broome at the time. We mistakenly went down the track of both of these fellows believing them to be sons of Leather Merchants from India. Was not to be, and this has taken us 6 months to get the family connection. They ended up not to be brothers, and it appears that the Harry Goddard in Broome is definitely the man who fathered these two children. What a journey it has been.
-
On the 1926 passenger list there are 2 columns at the end which give passport information - number, place and date issued. This isn't very clear but you may deduce something from the information.
If you would like a copy of the passenger list, send me a pm with your personal email address and I will forward it. (plus any others your require)

Sandra,
Thanks received both. Interesting isn't it though, he is a Butcher, then he is a Carpenter.
I know that plenty of my other family members who were Carpenters in England, made their occupation Farmers, when they came to Australia around 1912 onwards.
Depended on the need for workers in the country at that particular time. So I guess that is not unusual that Harry Goddard did that, but definitely the same person on each occasion.
He came from a family of Butchers in Reading, aged 19 years. jan

Good afternoon again,
Thanks so much for all your help, been an amazing journey with this family, but now I need some help once again, if anyone can be patient enough with me please. We have another relation to add to our family.
Harry Goddard (Henry) was in Vancouver for approximately 12 months before he sailed back to England.
Have a large DNA match with a person who lives in Canada, saying that the Father came from Berkshire and the mother from Canada. Now thinking that maybe Harry Goddard fathered a child sometime between 1926 and 1927 before he returned to the UK.
Wondering if there are any census records during those 2 years available in Canada.
Thanking you in anticipation. Jan

Latest census for 1926 covers Prairie Provinces.
