Post by: kay727 on Monday 20 May 19 08:46 BST (UK)
Helen Thorley was godparent at family christening when lived in.Deal, at st Andrews parish church, trying to find connection between her and my grandmother, has anyone researched family tree and come across her?

I have no idea if this is who you are after but I have found the following

Helen Esther Mary Rye born 16/01/1909
father Sheppard George Rye
mother Lizzie Rebecca Randall Rye, nee Long

Helen married
1) 1932 to Gilbert Grown Kent
2) 1955 to George Francis Thorley Newberry Berkshire/Hampshire
Helen's death 1987 and she then resided in Whistable

Gilbert Growns died 1953

If she signed as Helen Thorley in 1935 then we would need to find someone who was either born with that surname or had married into in by 1935.  I am not finding anyone obvious.

No I don't think so as she was thorley in 1935, but thank you. I found one born in 1903, but as say sure if maiden or married name. She would I assume have been in Deal at the.time.

Perhaps she wasn't local. Is it definitely Thorley? Not Thurley?

The writing is quite curled but it definitely looks like a closed 0.

Can you post a clip of the handwriting?

I don't want to confuse things for you but a Godparent did not have to be present - someone could stand proxy on their behalf

They also could just be friends or neighbours

Helen Thorley was the only recorded witness at St Andrew's church, Deal on 10th June 1935 at the baptism of Hazel Beryl Howis, daughter of William & Alice Howis, Collier of 113, College Road, Deal.
I can find no record of Helen's baptism in records of other churches so it must be assumed that she was baptised in another parish.

regards

AJ

Thank you for the information, my nan had links to Wigan and Rotherham, but nothing there either. She was in Deal for work and to be near family who had settled there, so perhaps Helen was the same. I am also assuming Thorley could be her married name, but no joy there yet either.

There's an Eleanor C Thorley whose death is registered in Thanet RD in 3Q 1935. Born circa 1874. A possibility.
