Title: William Smith
Post by: sasarina on Tuesday 21 May 19 03:43 BST (UK)
Hi wondering if anyone could help?
I know this is a stupid name to be researching, but I am trying to find an ancestor of mine named William Smith.
I have whittled it down to 2 possibilities.
One was convicted at Worcester assizes the other at Derby assizes.
I am trying to find out information for the William convicted at the Derby assizes, I only have scarce details here in Australia.
I have information states he was convicted in 1801, sentence life, transported on the Perseus, left Spithead February 1802.
The problem I have is that both the Williams, (Worcester and Derby convictions ) were transported on the Perseus, for the same date.
There are many different dates for his age at conviction ranging from 1751 to 1792.
I thought if I could get the Derby conviction William's details for eg. his date of birth, crime, birthplace I may be able to verify which is the correct one.
Thanking you

Hi

In the prison hulk Registers on Ancestry, William Smith of Derby in 1802 is listed as aged 35, so born abt 1767.

The Worcester  WS is listed as aged 37 so abt 1765.

WS of derby committed burglary, no age or address are given in the newspaper report, alias Siddals.

Think it is important to remember that the place of the trial may have no connection to the place of birth or residence of the convicts.

Thank you, so seems to be really no difference in their ages.
There is a William Smith, Perseus, died 1829 aged 78 in Rooty Hill NSW, so that makes his dob. abt 1751, very confusing, that's a difference of abt 14/15 years,   abt 49 at age of conviction.
I was hoping that one of them would fit the 1751 date?
