I'm trying to find out the names of the parents of the Thomas Keating who died 24 February 1905 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. According to the 1900 census he was born in Ireland in March 1830 and emigrated to America in 1850.
I'm not familiar with US records. Are there any that would give me the names of his parents? I have a possible match with the Thomas Keating who was baptised 16 March 1830 in Fedamore Limerick.

1870 census Pittsburg Ward 10 (transcribed as Hating s/b Keating)
Thomas 40 lab. born Ireland
Anne 30 born Ireland
John age 1 born Pennsylvania
Maryann age 1/12 born Pennsylvania (May)
Her birth is recorded on her death cert. as 5 June 1870, the census was taken June 1st.
Still looking for marriage certificate
-
Thanks amondg. Do you mean Maryann died on 5 June 1870?
Would the marriage or death certificate for Thomas have his parents' names?
-
Maryann was born 5 May 1870 not as recorded 5 June 1870 she married ? Ryan
She is listed as Mary in 1880.
Do you have the death certificate for Thomas Keating, if his parents names were known they
will be listed.
Same goes for his wife Ann Garry.
-
Thanks again, amondg, I was confused about Maryann.
I didn't know the name of Thomas's wife so thanks also for that.
Good to know the parents' name might be on Thomas's death certificate - I'll see if I can find it.
-
Found Thomas's death cert - alas, parents unknown :-(
Also it gives his age as 69 yrs 4 months 23 days on 24 Feb 1905, making a birth date of 1 Oct 1835. But that doesn't match the March 1830 birth date he gave on the 1900 census. I think that info would be more reliable? Or is that just wishful thinking?!

Sorry - this was no help.............. :-\

Thanks Sandra, good to have :-)

The name of Thomas' wife is from the death certificates of the daughters , Mary married Ryan, Ellen (Nellie) married Barrett, and Catherine (Katie) married Booth.
If you have seen the 1900 census then you know Thomas and Ann had 5 children 3 still living as of 1900. So there is another child born after Catherine or between Ellen and Catherine.
John born 1868/1869 has died before 1880 census.
Thomas consistently gives his birth year as 1830 and Ann 1842, it could be that the person giving the details at time of death got it wrong but 6 years is a lot. Ann says she was born 1842.
On Find a Grave. parents Thomas 1836-1905, Ann 1844-1904 and Catherine 1876-1903 share the same headstone. So who ever gave the details at death also had the headstone put up.
I would try to find the records of the Catholic Church closest to where they lived and see what is recorded there. You may find the 5th child and godparents are for the most part near relatives that could widen your search.
ADDED I once contacted a Catholic Church in Ohio and gave them as much information as I had and they kindly looked up the baptisms for me.
-
Amondg, thanks for putting the family together. I think I found the missing child: Blanche, born 7 August 1878 in Pittsburg, father Thomas Keating, mother Annie Keating.
Yes I agree 6 years is a big difference in birth year but I keep coming back to the info Thomas gave himself. Thanks for finding the headstone :-)
Good idea about the church baptisms, although if it's the Thomas Keating I have, he probably emigrated by himself. I'm still looking for his emigration details. One that stands out is an arrival in New York on 2 August 1850 on the Kingston from Dublin. This Thomas Keating is described as a labourer (fits with census entries), aged 21.

Wow! Thanks, Sandra, for so many pieces of the puzzle. After I've put them all together, I'll see if I can find any descendants. With any luck they might know something about Thomas Keating - even if he came from Limerick would help :-)
-
Try the Catholic Church in Pittsburg PA. for the marriage of Timothy Keating to Ann Garry. They often have much more information than the protestant ones.
