Looking to decipher the occupation of Robert Dunbar in the 1891 Canada Census for Brantford, Ontario.
Hope the image is large enough for easy viewing
We know at time of death he was listed as a bricklayer and had earlier been listed as a mason

Hostler (Ostler)?
Skoosh.
-
Hawker? Definitely begins with 'H' - see 'Hotel Keeper' above.

In the directory for 1894, that hotel keeper, Douglas Campbell, was at Exchange Hotel.
In the same directory, Robert Dunbar was the stableman for Exchange Hotel.
I can see that the first few letters could be the start of "horse", but not sure what the ending could be. A poor abbreviation of something like horse keeper??
Edit: Skoosh's Hostler with a letter stretched would fit.

Hostler for me...........

In the same directory, Robert Dunbar was the stableman for Exchange Hotel.
Then I agree, Hostler.

Thanks to all for teasing out Hostler.
We know our Robert was listed as a bricklayer in 1901 census and was living with his sister Isabella in Wroxeter. He was then in some sort of institution (House of Refuge) in 1911 and passed there in 1913. Occupation at time of death was bricklayer.
We have not seen an earlier document that outlines his occupation so wonder how he was a Hostler in 1891. Possibly fell on hard times and took this job.
More digging in the Brantford directory for years around 1891 may help.
Again, thanks all!
