Following on from this thread from Derbyshire, England
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=813391.9
I am looking for any further information about the family of Joseph and Jane Smith, in Providence, Rhode Island. There are a lot of connections that make me think I might have the right family.
The son I was looking for, Joseph Smith, died age 15 in Johnston, Providence, Rhode Island on 10th July 1874, parents Joseph and Jane Smith. Source: familysearch.org, Rhode Island Deaths and Burials.
The 1875 Rhode Island census gives the youngest sibling, Edith Smith, born 1872, birth location England (at odds with the 1880 United States Federal Census which says she was born in Rhode Island), living with parents Joseph and Jane Smith and siblings Sarah, Frances and Jane. Johnston, Providence, Rhode Island.
The 1880 United States Federal Census has Joseph Smith born about 1821, England, with wife Jane and children Jane, Fanny, Sarah and Edith M. North Smithfield, Providence County, Rhode Island. Edith's birth date is given as about 1873.
Before emigrating, Joseph Smith, the father, was a Cotton Spinner, and both Joseph and Jane were cotton workers. They lived in Stockport, Cheshire, and in another thread I was told that the Lancashire Cotton Famine of the 1860's was actually worse in Cheshire than Lancashire. Shipping companies were offering cheap passages to New York for cotton workers. I haven't yet found any emigration information for exactly when this family emigrated, but I think there were so many poor cotton workers doing this that ship passenger records could be thin on the ground.

I thought I'd post this much while I have it. I haven't connected the dots on Fannie's marriage or looked for Edith or the parents.
-- Edith was born in RI - there is a Warwick, Rhode Island, as well as the one in England, and the next column on the 1875 Census was "parentage" not place of birth. It doesn't look like their son Joseph came to the US, or Joseph's son William.

Thanks Oldohiohome, that is great information, and almost certainly proves it is the right family.
-
Yes, I think you have them. It is so easy when you have people on both sides of the Atlantic working on the records. I did an Irish family from Cork, in Massachusetts, a few days ago.
It's usually difficult working backward to the UK, although in this case the specifics on Sarah's death record would have done it.
I live in Northern RI, so knew my way around the records a bit. Lots of local color background on Slatersville and the mills there, if you are interested in that end. Just Google the village name - it is where they were in 1880 if you look at the image. It is a village within North Smithfield, a couple miles or so from us.
Here is a bit more, glad to be of help.

Thanks Sandra, I have carefully gone through all that information.
I have lost Jane Smith born 1860 Marple, Stockport, England and her sister Alice Smith born 1862 Stockport, England. Jane is on the 1875 census in Johnston, Providence, Rhode Island, USA, living with her parents and siblings, but Alice isn't.
There is a possibility that Jane is the same person as a Jane Smith on a New York passenger list, birth date about 1860, departure location Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland. Arrival location, New York. Arrival date, 3rd May 1880.
I am fairly certain it is Joseph Smith who died age 15 in Johnston, Providence, Rhode Island, in 1874.

Thanks for the Find a Grave link to Joseph, I hadn't seen that. Also the 1880 census for Jane, which shows she worked in a cotton mill. I will follow up with googling the history of the area and cotton mills in Rhode Island, as Oldohiohome suggested, "lots of local color background on Slatersville and the mills there, if you are interested in that end. Just Google the village name - it is where they were in 1880 if you look at the image. It is a village within North Smithfield"
Jane after 1880 and Alice I struggled to find them with no success.

I used to have ancestry.co.uk which has lapsed, and it never did give me American records anyway. I found Margaret's husband was called McCall, that is all I know, from Margaret's 1973 death record. I don't know anything about her children. I found the Find a Grave references to the burials of Edith and Margaret.

Yes, if I get another membership I will include American records, there are a lot of them and it would be worthwhile. I didn't renew because it is difficult to use on Apple Safari, and I can't manage Windows 10, didn't want to struggle with odd browsers. I keep having to use a special sign in process and it keeps failing, but still useful.

Are you looking at family search, they have a great variety ?
Sandra
Yes I am using familysearch, and a lot of other records too. Find a Grave is good. I have never had so many American records to look at before. I will look into an Ancestry membership that includes American records, maybe a short one because the issues with Apple Safari make everything more difficult, they don't really support it, but it is just about possible.
-
What is it particular you need ?

-
What is it particular you need ?

I think I am finding all the information anyway without the Ancestry tree. Margaret McMackin married Gordon MacCall, and they had two children Janet and Harold MacCall. There is actually a lot of information elsewhere, just the Ancestry tree makes it very easy to find.
As I said I might take out a short Ancestry membership with world wide records that include the USA. Or I could look in a library and follow those links.
I wasn't finding my UK Ancestry membership useful enough to continue, with the added hassle of it not being really compatible with Apple Safari.
Thanks for your help, I think I have all the information I need. It is only the descendants of Margaret McMackin, Harold and Janet, and there won't be any more information after the 1940 US census, and much beyond that point privacy gets intruded on anyway.

Thanks, I found the Find a Grave photographs for both Gordon MacCall and his wife Margaret. Also in the River Bend Cemetery. Obviously well cared for, somebody remembers them.
I also found the birth and death dates for Harold 1921-1992 and Janet MacCall 1924-2013, the children of Gordon and Margaret MacCall. I don't think you can really go much further, and anyone would know who their parents or grandparents are, for finding DNA matches.
I will look at those Ancestry trees. Right now just sorting a lot of information, but I will either look in a library or take out a short term world wide Ancestry membership.

Janet and Ray Gordon have 4 children marked private. daughter, son, son, dau.
Harold's wife is "unknown" and he has a "private" son

I was curious why Edith McMacklin died age 30, Westerly, 1922. But the RI death records do not go that late.

It is a legal requirement not to give data on living people, at least in the EU. It protects their privacy, which Ancestry UK ask users to accept. But those sons and daughters, especially if they have done DNA tests, will be able to see for themselves the research of others, if they are interested, and how they connect right back.
There could even be younger generations who are interested in their family history.

Thanks everyone, this thread has been very interesting. Strange how cotton workers settled in Slatersville from the Lancashire and surrounding cotton towns. I don't know what the environment was like in Rhode Island, but a lot of these ancestors in Manchester died of lung complaints, maybe from the Industrial air or working conditions, one from this same family in Manchester died in his early thirties from Asthma Anasarca. I have his death certificate. My great grandfather died of Tuberculosis in 1909, having worked in the Manchester cotton and woollen industry all his life.
