Title: YIKES! My Maternal Great Grandfathers Were Brothers!
Post by: CleGirl17 on Friday 31 May 19 06:05 BST (UK)
I've just discovered that my mom's maternal grandfather AND her paternal grandfather were brothers! Wondering what relationship that makes them to me? Very confused but yet, this does answer some of the quirks in the family, lol! Thank you.

They are still your Great Grandfathers. However, it does mean your mother and father were 1st cousins!

You are still a great grandchild  they are still your mother's grandfathers.  There are no genetical issues for you to fret over,  and nor should your mother.

They are still your great grandfathers but it means that they are also your Great Great uncles.  Although when I am related to someone in more than one way I take the closest relationship.

Pedigree collapse is very common in trees.

Does it not mean that the OP's maternal grandparents, her mothers parents, were the first cousins?

I don't understand this response. Are you saying my biological mom and biological dad were 1st cousins? Or are you staing my mom and her dad were 1st cousins?

Thanks.

Maybe that is what this response was trying to say?

Clegirl's grandparents were first cousins, not her parents.

Either way, nothing to worry about.

I agree with Gan Yam. CleGirl's maternal great grandfathers were brothers; her maternal grandparents were 1st cousins. Her father, I assume was not related by blood to her mother.

My paternal grandparents were first cousins,it's how people got to know each other back then, through family.

Their father's were brothers, the two nearest in age in fact, barely 2 years apart.
It makes family tree slightly easier to do as you only have one line to follow on that side  ;D

Thanks all.

Correct, my father was not related by blood to my mother.

I spoke with my mom and she said my grandma (her mother) says the she and my grandpa were second cousins. ???

I have double-first cousins: my mom and her sister married brothers. So I'm guessing that the idea they were second cousins is because the brothers were in the previous generation??

Not worried about health or genetics, just trying to figure this out. I had never heard of the pedigree collapse, so went and looked that up. As Carol18353 says, less work on part of the family tree :)

First cousins have a grandparent in common. Second cousins have a great-grandparent in common.
Did the great-grandfathers who were brothers each have the same mother and father?

Ah, then there you go, my grandparent WERE second cousins as they had great-grandparents (not grandparents) in common.

To answer your question, yes, the great-grandfathers who were brothers had the same mother and father.

Thanks!

Now I'm confused. That conflicts with what you told us.
This thread has the title "Yikes! My maternal Great Grandfathers Were Brothers!" I understood you to be referring to your great-grandparents on your mother's side, i.e. your mother's grandparents. Your latest post has introduced more generations of great-grandparents.  ??? ??? Starting with yourself as generation number 1 and working backwards, to which generation did the 2 brothers belong?

This is a postscript to my previous post. Repeat. If her 2 grandfathers were brothers, her parents (your grandparents) were 1st cousins. That is quite clear.  (Quite as in perfectly.)

Yes, this is different from what was said at the beginning.  Maybe it was just a typo and should have said "my mother's great grandfathers...." rather than "My maternal great grandfathers....."   Anyway - it's all clear now!

It may be clear to you. I await enlightenment.
Perhaps there was an earlier marriage of cousins.

Yes that is what I meant -- I'm sorry, I left out "great" grandfathers in the body of my original post and it shoud have been "mother's" instead of "maternal" in the subject line.  I apologize.

Should it have said "my mom's maternal great-grandfather and her paternal great-grandfather were brothers" ? That would make them your great-great-grandfathers. (2xGGF)
That would make their children, (your greats), 1st cousins. Their grandchildren, (your maternal grandparents), were 2nd cousins.
Now it makes sense.
It would be helpful to add a postscript to your original post saying "Amendment see … ( whatever number your post is with the correct information). Click on the symbol for editing at the top of your post.
