Trying to find information on my wife's great grandfather.
Shows on 1871 Census as William Simpson Taylor, living his mother Mary Taylor, a lodger.
Probably Mary Taylor probably not married. I suspect the father is a Mr. Simpson.
William Simpson Taylor appears again in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census.
Hoping that information will lead to info on my wife's Grandfather, William Taylor born 1897. Can only find scant details of William the son.
-
You really need to start with William Taylor b 1897 and work backwards. Where was he born, and have you found him in a census in 1901/1911 and/or the 1939 Register? Whom did he marry - and what paternal details were given then?
-
William Simpson Taylor’s son William was born in 1895 rather than 1897.

The GRO indexes shows no mother’s maiden name on his birth entry - so suggests illegitimate

If you trace via censuses, Mary in 1861 is with her widowed father James, in Crossley Street, and is working then as a fustian cutter - as she was in 1871. In 1851 James has his wife, Ann (Roberts ) still alive.
No clues about William Simpson T's father yet, sorry. Looking round in area to see if there's a likely lad....
-
... So far likeliest all seem a bit younger than Mary T:
A William Simpson b Warrington 1853, with his aunt Martha in the 1861 census...
A William Francis Simpson b 1851 who was living in Warrington in 1861, s of Charles and Ellen, in Irlam Street
A William Simpson b Warrington 1853 a servanty to the Hambleton family in Manchester
- all pure conjecture so far...

Well if we are looking for William Taylor born 3 April 1897, the William who was born 11 Aug 1895 (son of William Simpson Taylor & Alice, and found separately in 1939) doesn’t seem to be him!

Yes sorry - didn’t see that but it looks as though someone has mixed up the Williams in their tree and wrongly attributed the 1897 one to William Simpson Taylor when in fact his son was born in 1895.
