Title: Looking for census records for the Duncan Family of Drumnakilly, Omagh
Post by: apthorpea on Wednesday 12 June 19 12:22 BST (UK)
I am looking for any census or land records for the Duncans of Drumnakilly.  James Duncan was born abt 1850, the son of   Henry. He married Margaret Hamilton on 1 November 1870 in Omagh, Tyrone. They had seven children in 15 years. He died on 15 June 1906 in the Infirmary Omagh, Tyrone, at the age of 56. James marriage and death certificate show he lived at Drumnakilly .  All the children were born at Drumnakilly.  ( all records on civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie ) James was recorded as a farmer on his marriage and death certs.
There is also a  James Duncan born in 1845, the son of Owen. He married Mary Jane Hamilton on 26 November 1867 in Drumnakilly, Donegal.   Address for James was Drumnakilly  he was a labourer father was a weaver and  deceased at time of James's marriage.
I can only find one Duncan family living in Drumnakilly 1911, William James Duncan and wife Mary married 1 year.  married in Drumnakilly 4 Oct 1910 father was James Duncan.

I cant find the Duncans in the Valuation records or the 1901 census where I would have thought James and Margaret would have been recorded.Margaret died 4 Feb 1903   Any help would be appreciated.

Have you checked for a male J.D. age 51 Irish Church in 1901? (number 406)
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001211367/

There's also a male J.D. age 53 but R.C.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001211365/

https://www.townlands.ie/tyrone/strabane-upper/cappagh-upper-strabane-portion/cranny/

Added- it really does help if you post links to certificates to save us from searching and checking them. Is this your James Duncan? (the only James Duncan death in Omagh district in 1906)
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1906/05562/4561482.pdf
If so, age 64 not 56- born c1842 which probably rules out the above 1901 census results.

Thanks for all the information.  James was present at his wife's death in 1903 at Drumnakilly, suggests he wasn't in a mental home or workhouse at that time.  When he died in 1906 he had TB an advanced form of tuburcular adenitis.  His last address was Drumnakilly.  All bmd certificates related to the family puts his address as Drumnakilly.  I am surprised to find no records for him in the 1901 census at Drumnakilly.  The Donegal reference in 1901 is possible they could have been visiting their uncle or looking after him.  Or visiting someone else.   Thanks again

I was initially concerned about some of the gaps between children in the original list. I found, so far, 10 children for James & Margaret using Irish Genealogy site so the list imbedded in first post here is very incomplete. Interestingly there was a son Arthur born after John also registered as Donaghey.

Thank you for all that information, I will be adding it to my family tree of Duncan's.  They had so many children around that time.  Its no wonder they only lived until their 60s.  Regards Angela

Hi Angela,

I'm a DUNCAN whose ancestors are from Northern Ireland (have not found a connection to the Drumnakilly ones). In my hunt, I have been building a database of many DUNCAN families in Northern Ireland.

As you now know, the DUNCAN's of Drumnakilly go by the surname of DUNCAN and DONAGHY.
I wondered why that would be and Googled the Irish pronunciation of DUNCAN / DONNCHADH.
https://forvo.com/word/donnchadh/
This link has the Scottish Gaelic pronunciation, and if you scroll down there is the Irish pronunciation which does sound something like "DONAGHY". So, I think this explains the surname discrepancy. / This was a mind opening revelation to me!

PRONI.gov.uk (image scans) Public Record Office of Northern Ireland
VALUATION REVISION BOOKS.
Townland of Drumnakilly, Tyrone, you can follow the years to see the transfer of occupiers of Number 20. - There are no DUNCANs in the Occupiers listings.

Starts in 1860 with an ANDREW DONAGHY crossed out, "Dec'd" [deceased] then added is HENRY DONAGHY.
1871 HENRY DONAGHY is crossed out then added is JAMES DONAGHY.
1908 JAMES DONAGHY is crossed out and added is WM DONAGHY.
1912 the occupier is WM. JAS. DONAGHY.

WILLIAM JAMES DUNCAN is listed on the 1911 Census of Drumnakilly. So, together with the Tenement Occupier listings and the Census, we definitely know DONAGHY is DUNCAN.
__________

There are 2 JAMES DUNCANs who married HAMILTON women.

JAMES DUNCAN (son of HENRY) & MARGARET HAMILTON lived and died in Drumnakilly.

JAMES DUNCAN (son of OWEN) & MARY JANE HAMILTON.
JAMES lived in Drumnakilly at the time of his marriage. I am still researching this couple.
__________

Stepping back to HENRY DUNCAN. I believe I have found 3 children for him.
1. JAMES DUNCAN (MARGARET HAMILTON)

2. MARGARET JANE DUNCAN & (WILLIAM REDMOND)
WILLIAM is listed as deceased on the 1864 birth of their son JOHN HENRY REDMOND.
I don't know what happened to MARGARET & her son.

3. ANNABELLE / ANNA BELLA DUNCAN & (SAMUEL McCAUSLAND)
