Title: Lavoie/Lavoy family
Post by: WayfaringStranger on Saturday 15 June 19 03:26 BST (UK)
I am looking for birth and death records for Etienne Lavoie and I have had no luck finding either.
I've been at a brick wall for quite some time now. I figured I would ask on here in case anyone has more information.

He was supposedly born in Quebec around 1817-1818  according to the 1871,1881, 1891 and 1901 Census of Canada.
There was a family rumour that he was born in France and came to Canada as a stow-away, although I have found no evidence of this and the 1871-1901 Censuses of Canada points to Quebec as his birthplace. I have not found a 1841 or 1851 census with him or his wife.
I have seen many variations in the spelling of his name: Etienne Lavoie, Etienne Lavoy, Achan Levoy, Achan Lavoy, Eakin Leavoy, and Achan Leavoy.

There is a marriage record which I think is Etienne/Achan and Mary Ann but am not 100% as the spelling is odd. It lists a marriage between Achan Savwah and Mary Anne McKay 27 Oct 1840 in Fitzroy, Ontario. It looks like it says Onslow for Residence, which is in Pontiac Quebec. Under the heading license and banns it says "Publication".
On Ancestry there is a notation that states:
Achan Lavoy (Lavoie) rather than Achan Savwah
Correction due to an error in transcription.

Etienne Lavoie supposedly died in 1902 but I have not been able to find a death record.

I am also in search of a birth record for his wife Mary Ann Mackay/Mackey. I have been unable to find one for her so far.
She was supposedly born in around 1819-1820 in Ontario according to the 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901  Census of Canada.
On the 1891 Canada census it states her father’s birthplace as Ireland and her mother’s birthplace as Quebec.
She died Nov 23 1905. Her death record states she was born in Pontiac Quebec. around 1818.

Any help is appreciated.

The death certifocate for Mary Ann Lavoy in 1905 Hastings Ontario says she was a farmers wife - married - so perhaps Etienne Lavoie was still living at that point  ???

Is this possible baptism  ???

Baptism - originally under teven Lavoieuser submitted - [Etienne Lavoie] 27 April 1819 - La Prairie, Québec (Quebec) - Place of Worship or Institution Notre-Dame-de-LaPrairie-de-la-Madeleine.
Nicolas Urbain Lavoie - Mother Josette Bétourné

message board post - https://www.ancestry.com/boards/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=7153&p=localities.northam.canada.ontario.hastings

"Achan and Mary Ann Lavoy/Lavoie/Leavoy. Achan died May 11, 1902 in Hastings County, thought to be buried in Purdy Cemetery, Bangor (now Hastings Highland). Mary Ann Lavoy (MacKay) died November 20/23, 1905, Carlow, Hastings, buried White Church Cemetery"

"This cemetery has been referred to as the White Church Cemetery for many years. Reason being because of the White Church that is built there. It was built in 1875 and remains there today. The original records of this cemetery were destroyed in a fire many moons ago. The actual name is Carlow United Church Cemetery. It is located 2 miles north of Fort Stewart in the Carlow Towship, County of Hastings.
Hope this helps. As for Achan Lavoy he is buried next to Annie lavoy in the Prudy Cemetery "
