Hello.
My Grandmother, Constance Kate Miles, her 2 younger sisters and their Mother, Agnes P [nee Ferguson] Miles emigrated from South Africa to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia some time between 1899 and 1903.
Agnes is on the 1903 Melbourne Electoral Roll in Jolimont, inner city suburb.
Constance was aged between 8 and 12 when they sailed.
I don't know from which port they left South Africa nor in fact if their first foot-fall was in Melbourne.
My great grandfather, Harry Mowat Hamilton Miles, husband of Agnes and father to the girls, was killed in 1899 whilst further up the country in the Kimberley.
I have looked previously to this with no recalled success.
Regards and thanks,
Julie.

So where does this 1873 engagement fit into the story?
Or is it a co-incidence of names?

In that time period their first names probably won't be recorded and so you will most likely be looking for just Mrs MILES and three unnamed children. There are a lot of MILES entries for those years.

Hello Sue ("sparrett").
The Trove marriage was indeed in my maternal line: they being my late Mother's grandparents.
I did find that Nanna, Miss Constance Kate Miles and her young sisters were most likely with their mother, Mrs Agnes (nee Ferguson) Miles at that Jolimont address.
It's just that i haven't been able to find a shipping account for their journey from South Africa!
That would be just so lovely to have.
Kind regards to all respondents.
Julie.

Agnes Patterson MILES death registration is indexed online at Vic BDM as:
Rego # 4389/1943
Kew, Vic
Mother as Catherine GALLOWAY
Father as Daniel FERGUSON.
The image is available to download immediately and should give you many additional details including how long she had been in the colonies/states, and vital family history info for you to validate against your current knowledge.

On your other thread you stated you thought approximate arrival between 1899 and 1903 but from his death notice it sounds to me like Anges was already in Melbourne when he died.

I have posted on the other thread, I have a different understanding from giblet re the meaning of 'late of' in death and funeral announcements. To me, it refers to the deceased person, not to the living family.
Yes, quite often, the deceased and his/her family members would have lived together in the one household, but .... 'late of' is NOT confirming that Agnes was living in South Melbourne when her husband died in South Africa.
The notice does not state anything about where Agnes or the children were living when he died.
JM ... one finger typiste ... ::)

It seems from the limited given details that only 3 daughters came with mum to Australia. Is it possible that there could have been a few boys as well? I’ve got a mum with a family of six who arrive on the Moravian in 1899. Port of embarkation: Cape town

Hi Sue,
The men with my Nanna, Constance, her two younger sisters, and their mother, Agness were the sons of Agnes and her late husband, Harry Mowat Hamilton Miles, who had died in the Kimberley, South Africa in 1899.
Kind regards,
Julie.
