This man arrived in USA in 1880 according to his marriage record and he was married in Springfield Massachussetts. I am trying to find information from the Ellis Island records there is a US Passport application for him, but I cannotaccess therecord

There's a passport application for his son Eustace, is that what you are finding reference to? Ancestry lists it under James K Kneeland's name as well, since he is mentioned in the information.
It was in 1920 and Eustace was in Tampico, Mexico, since 1912 on business and says he desires the passport to remain there. All it says about his father is that he was born in Ireland and was working as a mail carrier in Springfield. He arrived, maybe in Boston, but with no date given.

The birth record for one of the sons gave a middle name Kirwin - James Kirwin Kneeland - 13 May 1894 ??? Have you explored that angle ?
Wonder if there could be variations on the surname - Neiland/Niland ??? (Just noticed you mentioned his parents under Neiland on the other thread)
Only 13 years old on immigration date 1872 as per 1900 census ? 1910 census is a sham - immigrated before he was born in 1862 on that one :-\

A marriage in Springfield Hamden Massachusetts 3 January 1882 for a Michael J Kneeland - aged 27 - son of John Kneeland and Hanora. Michael was a stone- cutter. Michael born about 1855.

Many thanks for that amazing amount of information. I think you were right about Honora's surname being Moylan as that is a common name in Ireland and it certainly looks like the whole family emigrated to Boston, but it would be interesting to find out if they travelled together. On 1 census or maybe it was on the wedding entry for james K and Elvie it noted immigration data as 1880.

Still more questions than answers :-\- U.S., Consular Registration Applications, 1916-1925 for Eustace Chester Kneeland states his father James K Kneeland born Ireland immigrated 1883, resided uninterruptedly 1883 - 1918 Springfield MA - applicant did not remember fater is a mail carrier in Springfield Massachusetts.

We now have 3 immigration dates 1872/1880/1883. Unless I can find the right date we cannot look for possible passenger lists which might have the correct dates.
Do USA death certificates have the place and date of death as British and Australian death certificates Have ?

James divored his fist wife Elvie in 1911
In January 1911 a deree of divorce was granted in the case of James K. Kneeland vs Elvie M Kneeland. She left him.
James K Kneeland died May 22, 1938. His death notice mentions no family members
James's brother Michael J Kneeland died in April 1926.
His obit mentions his wife and children as well as one brother, "James K Kneeland" all of this city. Also mentioned is a sister Datherine O'Connor of Worcester. He too was buried at Saint Michael's Cemetery.
Michael J. and Julia were married in 1882. The marriage record gives his parents as John & Hannora.

Great to know that we are on the right lines with brother Michael J Kneeland and sister Katherine O Connor. Finding the mother Honora in the City Directory entries and her death in 1906 Worcester MA.
Immigration dates are only as good as the informant knowledge. There were possiblities for James under various spelling of the surname but passenger lists at that time don't give a lot of information to positively identify someone.
