Thanks RJ 137
You have confirmed my suspicions that it is another Samuel who I am looking for.

If you want information on a different Samuel Swinnerton, then please post whatever details you have (date of birth, name of spouse, parents, children, and place of birth and city/states where he was known to have lived).
-
Samuel Swinnerton was born about 1847 Tipton, Staffordshire, England. He was married twice when in England first to a Martha Kirkham in 1870. two children Hannah born 1891 and John born 1892.
Then to a Alice Monk in in 1899 one son Frank born 1900.
It was in the early 1900's that Samuel and son John left England via Liverpool and went to New York.
He is shown on various census but then disappears.
He might have married again but not proven to a Martha Herrmann in 1915 Kings Saratoga.
Interested if the third marriage could be proved and more importantly when he ended up.
thanks,
bswinno.

This one had a middle name - if that helps count or discount him ?
There was a birth of a Clara Winslow/Winston Swinnerton - parents Samuel Winslow/Winston Swinnerton and Martha Hermann Swinnerton - Bushwick Church - 3 December 1915 - NY City. Baptised 14/1/1917
Sandra
-
Sandra,
Thanks for that, very interesting, I now need to look and see if a Samuel Winslow Swinnerton fits in to another tree anywhere.
bswinno
-
Was John Swinnerton, the one born in Bury ?
Sandra
-
Yes Sandra Dec 1892 died Jan 1973 Queens New York
-
There is a New York Passenger List - John Swinnerton born 1893 Bury - aged 21 years - machinist - travelling Liverpool to New York on the Baltic - arriving 1 May 1914 - also travelling Anne Swinnerton aged 22 years - weaver - both marked single. Going to New York. John gave his father as Samuel Swinnerton in Boston.
Typed above John was "in hospital discharged" - states he had been in the USA for 16 years - home 533 West 52 nd Stret New York
Sandra
-
There where a number of crossings around that time Annie (Hannah) went back and died Dec 1916 Bury. So the original crossing would confirm 1898.
Wonder what the Boston connection is for Samuel.
-
The marriage also shows a Samuel W Swinnerton.

Yes Sandra and all down to you, Many thanks for your help.
I doubt if the last marriage is for the Samuel that I am looking for because of the age of him in 1915 would put him in his late sixties.
bswinno.
-
There were two entries - ???
marriage license index - Samuel W Swinnerton
Marriage License Date 7 Jul 1915 Brooklyn, New York City, New York.
Spouse Geraldine Sievight
and the marriage index we referred to earlier 8 July 1915 - Samuel W Swinnerton and Martha Herrman
Sandra
-
Sandra,
So we now have two Samuel W Swinnerton marriages.
That's even more confusing >:(
I will need to find which families they are from.
Even if one was the correct one Samuel would be a bit old for marriage.
But I have found older marriages in the past.
bswinno.
-
One appears to be a marriage license that was issued on the 7 th July 1915 and the other a marriage which took place on the 8th July 1916 - ???
Sandra
-
Sandra
So do you think it would be safe to assume that they are for the same marriage?
bswinno
-
Reading again they cannot be as they show a different brides
-
It appears that Martha Herrmann may actually have married a Henry Bieber. The licence numbers for these 2 appear to match in the index and there is a tree that apparently has a copy of the marriage certificate as well.
PB
Added: on the other hand, there is a birth (1916 in New York City) and baptism for a Clara Winslow Swinnerton with parents Samuel Winslow Swinnerton and Martha Hermann.

Marriage license was announced in newspaper as well.
Haven't found them after that though :-\

Same birth date as Clara Winslow Swinnerton..................

Last Residence 08625 Trenton, Mercer, New Jersey.
SSN issued New York (Before 1951)

1920 census for New York City does have a Henry Bieber, wife Martha, son Henry Jr, and brother-in- law Andrew Herman. This appears to match the marriage posted about earlier.
I haven't yet been able to find Clara and family in 1920.
PB
-
This looks like it might be the family in the 1925 New York census...
Samuel WINSLOW 56 b. England Patternmaking
Martha 35
Clara 8
Emily 6
Samuel 4
Martha ? Months
Great find about Clara, *Sandra*
So...it looks like there might be 2 Martha Hermanns married to 2 different men?
Wonder what happened to the Swinnerton part of the name? Curiouser and curiouser....
PB
-
This would make Samuel Winslow born 1869 - Samuel Swinnerton shown with son John on the 1910 census was aged 42 years so born 1868.
The one the poster is looking for was born 1847 ??? (reply 4) So the age is a mystery ::) Fathering children at 70 plus ................
Seems Samuel Winslow shows on the records of Dutch reform Church memberships - 22 March 1914 Bushwick Church Brooklyn. Same Church where Clara was baptised on the marriage to Martha was shown ???
Sandra
-
There was a Samuel Winslow on the 1880 census in New York - an adopted son of William and Charlotte Benedict. Jay Street Brooklyn, Kings, New York.
William Benedict 42 Charlotte Benedict 36
Martha Winslow 17 Mary Winslow 15
Samuel Winslow 12 Joseph Winslow 9

Wow Sandra and Polar bear some powerful research you have both found.
I keep reading it over and over.
So it seems that the year and place I have for Samuel is incorrect. The year you have found fits in better to the tree I have.
Now the interesting part. It is obvious that when Samuel went to America with his young son John. That he was still married to Alice Monk. So he then married Martha Herrmann and went on to have a family with her.
So maybe he was covering his tracks and dropped the Swinnerton name and used Winslow.
Does this sound feasible?
Many Thanks,
bswinno.
-
It seems Samuel did change his name, maybe he didn't want to be found. It would be interesting what he described his marital status as on the marriage to Martha :-\
Notice on the marriage certificate for son Frank Swinnerton when he married Alice Lindley 21 st June 1930.
Frank was 29 years - bachelor - warehouseman - 46 Ainsworth Road Radcliffe - father Samuel Swinnerton - Pattern Maker (deceased)
Perhaps Frank was just told his father had died ???
It seems Alice Monk/Swinnerton never remarried - probate to Frank Swinnerton when she died 8 March 1949 - (probate 28 April 1949 Manchester Lancs. )
Sandra
Just realised we covered Frank in the previous thread
-
Yes Sandra very intriguing defiantly looks like a name change to cover his tracks.
So my search now needs to be for the Winslow name.
Interesting what you said about those American marriage certificates. Are any available online?
bswinno.

Haven't found anything for either Samuel or Alice Swinnerton in the divorce records.

A possible New York Death Index shows a Samuel Winslow born 1920 who died 13 December 1964 - Queens, New York. Cert - 15984 - could be the son of Martha and Samuel Winslow ???
Sandra
-
Sandra
So Samuel even in his late sixties was having children.
I am trying hard to get to grips with all the information that you have found.
I would think now that there is no doubt that its the correct Samuel. I am also drawn to his mothers maiden name show as Munslow and the likeness to Winslow. Maybe Samuel was not too sure of the correct name.
Thank you so much for your help.
bswinno
-
Martha was the last child born in 1924 when Samuel would have been 56 years old. The entry for her on the 1940 census is in correct.
Sandra
-
Yes you are right Sandra. My quest now is to find when Samuel died and which cemetery he may be in. I will check if he is with Martha in the one mentioned in the posting.
thanks,
