Title: Just one word ? Or is it two ?
Post by: RobinBClay on Sunday 23 June 19 18:55 BST (UK)
In 1961 my grandmother visited Canada and the USA, and spent several months touring with a Canadian friend (whose car it was).  She kept a brief Journal, and at the end of the trip gave her this Journal, and 25 years later her daughter gave it to my mother. The Journal has a summary - a couple of pages of a table showing

Date - Place - No. of nights - Miles

Then follows the mystery, on a page by itself.  It is NOT my grandmother's handwriting, so I suspect it is the friend's handwriting..

The first line is
23 States

The second line is
(2 overwritten) 3 Provinces ( 4 ?????)

and it is this last word (or is it two words?) that I can't decipher.

Can you ?  Please ?

Thank you, Mike.  I did wonder; but it doesn't seem to make sense.
Here's another entry in the same hand -
"P.B., Joan & Carl were asked
to go to P.E.I. as soon as possible.

... which makes perfect sense in the context (several pages further in).

I think your grandmother visited 3 provinces, but her three friends (the trio) also went to Prince Edward Island, so 4 for the trio.

Were there more people on the tour?  If the 'trio' refers to the three who went to PEI 'as soon as possible', maybe the note says that those three visited 4 provinces and whoever wrote the page didn't go there so only visited three.

But then if PEI is the fourth what is the third after Ontario and NB?  If they started in Ottawa they may have crossed over to Québec is one solution.

I wondered if (On)t)(a)rio was the fourth,as Toronto is at the end of the list.Perhaps it's a colloquial abbreviation(!)

It looks like '4 for trio' to me and, since it seems to be a parenthetical to '3 provinces,' I'm guessing that a total of 4 provinces were visited.  Three [Ontario, New Brunswick and PEI] were visited on the long road trip and an additional province was visited on a separate trip made with someone else, the third member of the trio.

Thank you all for taking the time.  Reading further into the Journal.... P.B. and his wife Joan (mutual friends of Carl and of my grandmother) had arrived in Canada slightly earlier than my grandmother, and had toured a bit with Carl, who lived in Toronto, and whose car it was.  Granny started her tour, got to PEI, and then had a heart attack !  So the others rushed to her bed side.  So, Yes, I guess Mike in Cumbria (and others) had it right - Granny wrote the Journal, and gave it to Carl at the end of the trip, as a memento.  So Granny did the 3 Provinces, while "the Trio" - P.B., Joan & Carl - did four.  And the writing would be Carl's.

I'm putting it up at  http://www.spanglefish.com/olavetocarl/index.asp?pageid=700116  ;-)
