Title: Street renamed in Abbey Hey Gorton
Post by: ManU on Saturday 29 June 19 04:43 BST (UK)
Not sure if anyone can help,
Clarence Street, Abbey Hey near Gorton was renamed to Claymore St
Cooper Street, Abbey Hey near Gorton was renamed Courier St
Both streets were next to Jetson Street which I believe used to be called Jackson St
I know they had new names as far back as 1950 but don't know when they changed and why
My grandmother lived in Courier St and my greatgran lived in Claymore St and an early census record said she was in Clarence St

There's a long stretch between census and whenever GreatGran lived in Claymore st.
maybe she simply moved home.

Was there bomb damage and re-building after the war?

It is Clarence Street on the 1950 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/389671/396956/13/101329
Claymore Street on the 1958-73 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/389671/396956/13/100765
The same with Cooper Street, to Courier Street.

I have an old A-Z street atlas which has a list of street names changed around the time of publication (early 1950s or so). It lists the change from Jackson St to Jetson St, but only had the older names for the other two streets (Clarence St and Cooper St). So that suggests Jackson/Jetson St was first to change names.

Jackson, Clarence and Cooper are very common street names.  I would guess there were simply too many of the same name across the Manchester area, so they changed a few to avoid confusion.

Thanks guys only just gone back to Rootschat to check things out don't know why my computer didn't notify me of replies
anyway it sounds the change was between 1950 and 1958 - I was born in 1950 and lived there until 1953
