Maurice Neligan and Margaret Sullivan of Ballymullen, their daughter Honora born 1854 married a soldier named Joseph Durden at Ballymullen barracks. These are my daughter's ancestors, she has done DNA but nobody seems to be researching the family and apart from their children's baptisms I can't find any more info. Will I ever be able to get further back with Maurice and Margaret or should I give up?
-
Have you looked for the family on census records?
-
Tralee parish records look fairly good, they go back further than most
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0680
but it may be Margaret was from a different parish and marriages usually happen in the bride's parish so it may be worth searching surrounding parishes if their records survive.
It's also possible as Maurice was a stone mason the family may have moved to the area.

Looks like Maurice died 1881 aged 58

I don't see an oblivious death for Margaret, do you know when she died?
-
I dont know Im sorry, thankyou for this link I'll look at it now. ;D
-
I know you want to go back from Maurice and Margaret but have you looked from marriages and deaths for all their children
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp
Both Honora and Elizabeth married COI, I wonder if the Neligan's were fairly well off and is it possible that Maurice was COI, most of the Neiligan's in the area seem to be well off.
-
That’s an eye opener. I have Honora and Elizabeth’s marriages , nothing for other kids. Maurice was a stone mason. Honora seemed anything except posh tbh, they lived in near poverty and some of her kids died. She admitted herself and her unmarried daughter Maggie to the workhouse.

Got their marriage from the link thankyou and realised she was O'Sullivan! Resided Ballymullen, two Mr Collins were sponsors.
-
Have you searched this Search on https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ rather than Civil Reg
-
From that Search you can Select Kerry plus Religion or 1700's, 1800's etc from List on left
-
That Search gets one...
-
If you click e.g Kerry C of I
then the 1800's folder you can get them by Decade too

Thankyou, I’ve also just found in 1880 Tralee newspaper archives a ‘woman named Neligan’ from Ballymullen, wife of a mason, receiving outdoor relief of 3s as husband was too ill to work. I believe these are my Maurice and Margaret as Maurice died a year later of stomach cancer and was a mason in Ballymullen. Putting it here in case anyone is researching them in the future. Have all the kids baptisms now thanks 😁

Maurice died 1881 aged 58
Did you find his Birth?
-
No sadly not. The other Neligans seem well to do, a solicitor etc, but mine seemed destined for the poor house! Have seen a couple of other Maurice's in nearby areas but it doesnt fit with age at death, marriage etc.
-
None born 1823/24?
-
Yes one 4 Feb (my youngest girls birthday!) 1824 but in Castleisland. Unsure if mine as there are others about. A Maurice Neligan married Margaret Lean in Castleisland 1862 (and it's not the Maurice who was born there in 1839, as the parents are different). I believe my Maurice was sponsor to Ann O'Connor and Joanna Hallinin's baptisms in Ballymullen.

Thankyou for looking, I'll have a look in the morning. I'll look at newspaper reports too in case they covered it, being allegedly 105 at time of death, although probably he wasn't sure of the exact year of birth. Not sure how far Listowel is from Tralee/Ballymullen, will have a dig.
