Title: CdV of Hexham lady - date please?
Post by: JenB on Tuesday 02 July 19 10:32 BST (UK)
I would appreciate a date for this CdV please.

Given that she is displaying a bustle, and that the CdV has square rather than rounded corners my very inexpert thought is that this is early 1870's.

Am I correct, please?

Fashion changed markedly in 1875 - the voluminous and over decorated dress/skirt became much more sleek.

Yes Gadget and although I find them beautifully made I wouldn't want to wear one  ;D

Here's an example of a really elaborate one, dated 1872:

Imagine cleaning/washing/ironing that!  Maybe they didn't  :-X

Add- another dated 1870:

Thank you both very much. I'm relieved that, for once, my dating seems to be correct  :-X

Yes, there could well have been creatures of various sorts nesting in all those ruffles.

Yes Gadget, that would have been my estimate if I had been around to see it, having seen so many images on here over the years and reading up on Victorian fashion as we do, you get a feel for the decade. Having said that, we do sometimes get images that throw us from time to time when the image and the card stock don't match  ::) ;D
Not an AgLabs Daughter or wife dressed like that  ;D
I have learnt so much from you, China and Jim over the years.
You are getting a lovely collection together Jen.

Thank you  :)

This woman has a very similar hairdo, and the photo is of the same era. I did wonder if it might be the same person, but not sure now  :-\ What do you think?

That is an interesting one Jen . At a guess if not the same person years apart, mother and daughter or sisters.
There does seem to be a difference in hair growth near the ears .

Very many thanks for doing that  :)

Although they are very similar, I'm not entirely convinced. I think the woman with children looks older, and her hair at the back appears to be a bit shorter  :-\

It's very difficult because of the angle and the head of the girl is partly covering the bottom of her hair - what you think of as her hair line is the back of the girl's head, I think.
The hairstyle is fairly common in that period but not sure how older women might have worn it  :-\

PS - I now think that they are different after doing lots more looking!

I think there is a relationship between the two women but having closely looked at Gadget's images, I think they are probably two different women.

I really think she has a great resemblance to Princess Alice,Queen Viktoria’sdaughter who went to live in Hesse  Darmstad after her marriage.

She was the mother of the last Tsarina of Russia.
She died fairly young as she nursed her own children through a childhood illness but died from it herself .
The hairstyle is just as hers was.
The children could be boys or girls as boys were dressed as girls until five .
Viktoria.
P.S.looked it up born 1843,so 30 ish when that fashion was worn.
