Hi everyone - apologies if I'm posting in the wrong area.
Can anyone help with this please...
Any idea what this means on the GRO website .... Jackson, Richard age 38 GRO ref: 1873 S quarter in Manchester volume 08D page 154 (all that's pretty standard on each result) then it says (which is not on every one) Occasional copy:A
I've never come across that before.... I'm pretty certain this is my 2nd Great Grandfather - but wanted to narrow to down a bit before I jump in with spending money...

It means a correction has been sent in to the GRO, you would need to buy a copy of the certificate to seen what the correction was.
Cheers
Guy

Thank you... I was suspecting as much... fingers crossed this is him... He appears to be buried (albeit a few years before) in a pauper grave in the same cemetery as his wife ended up in... but not the rest of his family!
Once again, thank you for your reply :)

A very technical answer from a site on the Internet.

Which is wrong in many aspects
It is exactly what Guy said - a correction submitted outside of the normal quarterly returns process. If another correct was made later it would be Occasional Copy B etc.
It is not a re-registration, nor a late registration.

Since I contributed to the thread quoted here, I'd be interested if you could explain how it is wrong, as I can then add a further comment to put it right. (If there's more detail than you wish to post here, you can send me a PM.)
Note that the situation described in that thread was that the occasional copy was listed in the same quarter as the original registration, but with an earlier page number. How might that fit with an occasional copy being submitted outside the normal quarterly returns process?
Also note that most or all of the detailed reply is quoted from correspondence with the GRO - so were they getting it wrong?
