Title: Albert BECK bap 1891 migrated to Canada May 1914
Post by: Westy11 on Saturday 06 July 19 14:01 BST (UK)
Based on the post at https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=815283.new#new Albrt BECK son of Henry BECK & Amelia TOMLINSON was baptised at Cadeby, Leicestershire, England 05 Apr 1891.

In May 1914 Albert aged 23 and a qualified carpenter and joiner migrated to Canada with a destination of Toronto.

It seems he marries Bella/Isabella and the couple have one child however I am hoping with your help to confirm this events and hopefully locate further information concerning his family in Canada.

Google has mashed two things together there. This is the pertinent one:

"Bella Beck, born 1891
Bella Beck was born in 1891, at birth place.
Bella married Albert Beck.
Albert was born in 1891, in Cadeby, Leicestershire, England.
They had one child.
Bella passed away."

Is there any other reference of a "Leonard" within the Beck family.

To date I don't have any other reference to a Leonard in the line of the BECK family that I am pursuing.

I havent finished my research into Albert's siblings and their descendants.

"Leonard" is a red herring. As I have said, Google mashed two MyHeritage teaser reports together in response to Sandra's search.

This is the full version of the "Albert Leonard" item:

"Bella Anne Beck (born MacLean), 1916 - 1997
Bella Anne Beck (born MacLean) was born on month day 1916, at birth place, to Kenneth MacLean and Alexina MacLean (born MacLeod).
Kenneth was born in 1889, in Isle of Skye Scotland.
Alexina was born in 1889, in Kilmuir, Scotland.
Bella had 2 sisters: Kathleen ROCK (born MacLean) and one other sibling.
Bella married Albert Leonard Beck on month day 1945, at age 28 at marriage place.
Albert was born on May 25 1917, in Indooroopilly, 4068, Australia.
They had 2 children.
Bella passed away of cause of death on month day 1997, at age 80 at death place.
She was buried on month day 1997, at burial place."

Hi,

Checked Toronto papers and didn't see anything for Albert.

Looked in the 1921, 1915 and 1914 Toronto Directories and didn't see him...but there is an Albert C. Beck, carpenter in the 1913 Directory.  He boards at 150 Spadina Ave.

Many thanks to Sandra, Shaun, David, & RK,

To date there is no indication Albert used the middle name of “Leonard” nor any middle name in England however I have noticed that some parents give a name to their child and perhaps add middle names later so it’s certainly possibly that Leonard was his middle name.

Those who have gone before us obviously didn’t realise a whole industry based on official records would form the basis for genealogical pursuits when tracking descendants.  Perhaps if they had they would have been more diligent to ensure those of us who come after wouldn’t have such a tough time of it when tracing them.   ;D

RK located an Albert C. Beck in the 1913 Directory.  Albert’s May 1914 migration asked if the person migrating had previously been to Canada and if so when and for how long.  Albert had said no to each of these questions. What does this mean for a 1913 Directory entry? I wonder did Albert organise his employment and accommodation before he migrated and if so then this would perhaps fit.

In addition whilst Albert was both a qualified carpenter and joiner; his migration papers noted he was permanently moving to Canada and the trade he would follow was Joiner. These trades share commonality so perhaps Albert found employment as a Carpenter rather than a Joiner???

Shaun located a reference to the 1917 born Albert's birth in Indooroopilly in Queensland. The Albert I am seeking was definitely born in 1891 in Cadeby Leicestershire, England.  Maybe there were two Alberts both born around a similar time, both Carpenters/Joiners and both moved to Canada???

Any ideas?

Somtimes those directory entries (particularly in the USA) refer to the year previously.  Wouldn't have thought they would record hin before he arrived. He doesn't seem to appear on the next census in 1921 as we mentioned previously. Wonder if he succumbed to the flu epidemic between 1918 - 1920  ???  Or could he have returned to the UK  ???  Didn't see an entry for him crossing the border to the USA.   Have you got an exact birth for Albert ?

None of the probate entries for the brothers that I searched yesterday mentioned Albert.

An Albert Beck married Isabella Morton Muir in Queensland in 1920.
She died in 1954 (parents David Muir + Mary Brown)
But I don't know if this is Bella + Albert from the online tree

See notices in the Brisbane newspapers in May 1954 on Trove ;D
Here's one of them, Metropolitan Funerals

The name Bolton is mentioned (and I think is also in that MyHeritage tree)

The information jonw65 has found for you indicates that this couple had at least one daughter who was a student in 1980 when the family lived 12 Uralla Street  Dorrington Queensland.  Father was a surveyor.

Hello Sandra, Jon, & Shaun,

Thank you so very much for your fantastic work. And how amazing to find Albert's remains  lie not far from where I work.

I genuinely don't think I would have though to look in Australia and nonetheless I am so glad you did.

I will look and try to find when Albert came to Australia.

Thanks so very much once again.  :-*

By the way, if you are looking for Albert on the Megantic, departed Liverpool 25 April 1914, via outward passenger lists from the UK...
On ancestry he is A Book, 29. The other site has him as A Bock.
The second and third letters in Beck are a bit unclear! But it does say that he is 29.
Confirmed by his ticket number, 3172371

It's not always easy to find them!
