Title: Puntdnal k13?
Post by: kr236rk on Tuesday 09 July 19 19:22 BST (UK)
Hi,

Been told GEDmatch has a few minor matches with someone I sent my GEDmatch number to.

They kindly looked at various different admixture calculators,, using my number, and found some Indian [South Asian] markers on something called 'puntdnal k13'.

What does this mean, & how can I follow through to do my own search at puntdnal k13 please?

Many thanks.

Gedmatch offers many different admixture calculations. I wouldn’t waste too much time worrying about the ethnicity percentages if I were you. Focus on your matches and try to work out how you connect to them.

Thanks,

Am UK based: puntDNAL K10 (chart) gives me Amerindian matches :-o which can only be by way of a common ancestor I guess?

You need to read up more on the different types of ethnicity calculators as they are not all the same. For example puntDNAL focuses primarily on Africa then West Asia and only latterly Europe. So this being the case is that the right calculator for you to be using given what you know of your ethnicity?

Thanks. 'K10 Ancient' gives me 51% Western hunter-gatherer, 20% Caucasus h.g. & 28% Early Farmer(?) [ENF], so what would the best calculator be for West European please?

Not that this helps me 1 iota with peopling my family tree!  :D

If you want to look at ethnicity estimates then stick to the ones on the site where you did your original test. They are improving regularly. However, be aware that whichever ones you use they are just estimates based on reference populations. If you want to populate your tree then work with your matches and do not worry about ethnicity estimates.

Have two interests here which are separate 1) peopling my tree - also so that I can discover more about my Powell line; 2) delving into ancient populations suggested by dna charts, which I find endlessly fascinating.

What was the answer to my question please?

My tree research is on-hold until my 2-week trial period ends, everything I want to see now is behind the pay wall.

Beyond the wall, I am hoping that other Powell families will have woven my Powell relatives into their own trees, that would be a huge leap forward for me - I hope I am not disappointed in this expectation.  :-\

Eurogenes is the calculator for European ancestry. (Eurogenes genetic Ancestry project) and Eurogenes  K13 is the default model.

However as is often said these predictors do not actually tell you your ethnicity what they tell you is what you have in common with the sample populations these predictors use. As different companies each have their own control populations this is why you can get widely differing ethnicities if you submit your DNA to a range of these companies. Indeed there is a thread on this where people have compared the different results they have got from different companies

Thank you - I'm a professional dreamer & the dna charts get me going! :D

Found all the K charts last night, the K13 has main hits for NE Europe and SW Europe with much lesser results for West Asia, even less for South Asia, & even less for SE Asia. Elsewhere there are residual results.

West Asia is the Middle East / Anatolia, so nothing surprising there with the spread of early farming up from southern Europe.

South Asia is basically the whole of India, someone wondered (myself included) if this pointed to a Romany connection in the family, albeit a distant one?

SE Asia - between India and Australia, no idea but fascinating.

Tried to keep away from the dna side of things but it wouldn't let me, have now found dna matches with four (I stopped counting at 4) Gedmatch individuals. But just how we relate will remain a mystery until the 'brick walls' on my tree give way I feel.

Ah well, if they are on Gedmatch you will have their email addresses so you can email them and see if they can help (although from experience this is hit and miss and more often miss, sadly)

Thanks. One I did this with & it gave me additional INNELL history, the others were confirmed in a Facebook Group on the Messenger application, but obviously I need to confirm everything on the 'paper trail'. Signing up with Ancestry was a gamble but it seems to be working out okay.
