Title: George S Martin and Mary Jane Pope
Post by: mcadamsd on Wednesday 10 July 19 22:09 BST (UK)
Looking for George S Martin and Mary Jane Pope who lived on Walnut street, Seymor, Connecticut, USA around 1942 based on  a border crossing for Mary Jane Pope 16 Sep 1942 which notes her name now Martin so they married before that date.  On 8 Jul 1943 she again crossed the border.  At Calais , Maine going to 27 Glover St(?), Ansonia, New Haven, Connecticut listed as home of George S Martin, Spouse.

We know little of George S Martin.  Family history has no details on his birth year or location or how Mary Jane Pope met him.

After the border crossing 8 Jul 1943 we have little info.   Family info has George S Martin passing in Maine but nothing to support that.  We have an image of Mary Jane and Jessie with a young child but no date and nothing to identify the child or location

We believe there was a son William Ross Martin but that information is from a cousin and not from a record.

We know Mary Jane Pope was born  6 AUG 1901  at Wroxeter, Huron, Ontario, Canada to Donald Clark Pope and Catherine "Kate" Cary McEwen.  We know Mary Jane was with parents in Wroxeter in the 1921 Canada census.

Mary Jane had two siblings

Donald Ross McEwen Pope ( He provided the info on the marriage and the possible child)

Birth MARCH 18, 1904 • Wroxeter, Ontario, Canada
Death 1985 • Kitchener, Ontario, Canada

Jessie Catherine Pope

Birth 9 JUL 1899 • Wroxeter, Huron, Ontario, Canada
Death 21 MAR 1966 • Vancouver, British Columbia

We have much detail on siblings.  Mary Jane and spouse remain a mystery

It appears they married in 1941.

1942 Ansonia City Directory
George S (Mary J) Martin, paper maker in  Seymour [CT], resides at 27 Clover, Ansonia

[didn't own the house, just resided there]
no other Martin families at that address

1948 Ansonia City Directory
George S (Mary J) Martin removed to Maine

You have to love City Directories that tell you when the person left or died :).

I was skipping some years, so I don't have the addresses from the directories between 1943 to 1947. If they turn out to matter, I will look for them later.

This looks like it could be Mary. So perhaps George S Martin did die in Maine?
The DOB matches and her middle intial is "J"(Jane?) on the Maine death index.

US Public Records at ancestry.com has a George S Martin on Fore St, Oxford, Maine, in the years 1994-1996. It is not unusual for the year to be later than the person's death. But, I don't find a William R[oss] Martin in Oxford, Maine. I tried Googling, and at ancestry.com.

William would have been born not long after the marriage, considering Mary Jane's age, so probably in Connecticut.

Many thanks for filling in many blanks.  Not sure why my searches failed to find some of this information.

We now know George was involved in the paper industry so that explains the locations.

Still no birth location for George S or parents.  Knowing birth around 1902 may yield results in Canada.  I can find no reason Mary Jane would have been in that part of US in order to meet George Martin

Search for William continues

I didn't find Mary J Pope anywhere in the US before her marriage. And I didn't find George S Martin anywhere either. If he was born in Canada, wouldn't there be a record of him entering the US also? Mary J Martin's says 'accompanied by husband', but if he was not a US citizen, wouldn't there be a separate record for him? Or one in his name saying he was accompanied by her? I'm not sure.

George is not in the 1940 Seymour City Directory or the 1940 and 1941 Ansonia Directory. His death record might give his parents' names and maybe his place of birth.

I looked at veromi.net for William Ross Martin and none of the results looked promising. You can take a look yourself. The men in the 70s are, for the most part, in states you probably wouldn't retire to if you lived in Maine. None in Maine itself. One in Richmond, VA, but his former residences look like New Jersey, and he is linked to people name Ross, not Martin, so there might be some confusion on veromi's part. It happens on the people finder sites sometimes.

I tried William R Martin in Maine, and the results were even less promising.

I think it will be difficult to find him, but happy hunting anyway.

If nothing further does materialise on here. There are a couple of RAOGK volunteers who will research in Maine. Second and eighth on the lists with this link.  Might be worth an e-mail  ???

Here is George's WWII Draft. States he was born in Ansonia, CT. It's available at Fold3 for free. Just use the element blocker on your adblocker to eliminate the ad block as well the blurred screen they use to tease you with to join. Then you can often see the records at Fold3.

=============================

This would be his family in the 1900 census living in Ansonia, CT. His parents are William & Annie and he has a sister Annie L. (b.1899).

1900 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M979-TDZ

It appears the family moved to New Brunswick, Canada. Looks like that was where they were originally from.  Here they are in the 1911 census with son George S. plus others born since the 1900 census. Census gives his birth, as well as his twin's birth as Aug. 1902, which matches his DOB on death WWII & Death record.

The census states he & his twin were born in New Brunswick, Canada, but I believe that to be an error.

Here is his twin sister Georgia's marriage record. She states she was born in Ansonia, Ct. USA

George's twin sister Georgia died in 1965. DOB listed as August 25, 1902, Ansonia, CT. This matches the known information for George S Martin.
