I am looking for any information on my great grandfather. He lived in Canterbury and was married to Julia Hole. Thank you if anyone can help with his parents or where they were from.
-
Do you have George on any census?
When, and where, did he marry Julia?
-
I found a George Lewis Hoskin marrying a Julia Hole in 1903 on a New Zealand index. Could that be him?
You need to specify the country, as there are a LOT of Canterbury's on this planet! :)
-
Yes the fact that he lived in NZ is a rather important piece of missing information!
Father was William Hoskin, according to his 1902 military record (volunteering for service in South Africa).
William was his next of kin. Address: Goldhurst, Canterbury.

Sorry I've had no luck finding a passenger list ???
There are several public trees on Anc*y and no passenger list for parents, birth or marriage certs and the only UK census mentioned 1861 / 1871

her husband William John Lugg
pictures of 4 of their children
There’s this mention of their immigration - quote
"29 May 1875
Ship "Blair Gowrie" arrived Lyttelton 23 August 1875.
Only voyage this ship made to NZ.
This was the maiden voyage of this clipper ship., which had 430 government immigrants,
described as mostly West Country farm labourers.
Annie and Bill were married a few weeks before it left from London.
Perhaps Annie's parents were also on board."
Another tree mentions Jesse Hoskin married Sarah Keast in 1885 NZ there’s a family picture, 1886 they were resident Ellesmere, Canterbury, New Zealand

It appears George's brother Edwin James Hoskin may have married in NZ 1885 Christina HAY
The Private Baptism date 10th November 1878 St Keverne Cornwall

George Lewis age 9
Lois age 5

Due to these children being baptised in Cornwall it's possible that immigration year could be late 1878 and before the 1885 marriage in NZ of their sons Jesse & Edwin
Do they name both parents on a NZ marriage cert. ?
-
1851 census could explain how they met.
Carnsellon, St Keverne HO107/1913 folio 127 pg 6
Stephen Roberts head unm 55 farmer of 55 acres employing 2 labourers
Charlotte sister 52
Elizabeth Bray 21 house servant
William Hosking 20 farm servant
all born St Keverne
;)
-
think this is William in 1841
Coverack, St Keverne HO107/138/2 folio 22 pg 6
James Mildron 40
Grace 50
Wm Hoskin 10
the census is just after the couple's marriage on 27 May 1841
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01o2f/
The only William Hosking burial in St Keverne between 1831 and 1841 is for William aged 70 19 Dec 1834.Coud explain why William didn't remember him. Possible marriage 27 Aug 1809 for William Hosking of St Keverne and Grace Stapleton of Mullion
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01o2g/
The lack of father for Grace on 1841 marriage would fit with the St Keverne baptism 12 Dec 1790 for Grace Matthews Stapleton daughter of Elizabeth.

oh great! :D :D I have been travelling back home to Auckland from visiting my father today but I will now sit down and look at this new information. I will send him the details. He was so happy to have this extra knowledge of his family (as am I). Any little tidbit means a lot. Thank you very much for your help
-
To be honest this thread is confusing as nobody is putting which County/Country to their finds as it was mentioned earlier up thread many places have same names in different Countries & saves 'googling' to find those place names.
A possible marriage?
