John (known as Jack) Bateman (1856-1955) is my great grandfather by his second wife Mary Ann, nee Park.
I have no details concerning his first wife, but he would be ca 25 in 1881, so might possibly be married to her at that time. If so, the 1881 census for John Bateman (blacksmith at Patton Bridge, Grayrigg) would be very helpful.
Does anyone have access to that census, please?
I would be very grateful for any pointers
with many thanks
-
I can find him in 1871 in Patton Bridge with parents William and Eleanor and after that he just disappears.
There is a marriage in Kendal RD in 1882 for a John Bateman to a Jane Rawes which may or may not be him.

thank you indeed (for two prompt replies)
There's quite a lot there that matches the bits and pieces of information that I think I know (various corroboration is needed). The matches are:
John B would be 25.
His mother was Eleanor - who would be 45, and a widow.
His father was William - who died 1875.
The children would be born at Patton (Bridge).
Similarly, death of a Jane B in Kendal at 23 is a strong pointer.
I am a new-starter in genealogy (my current info is from a tree made 20+ years ago by a distant cousin). May I ask the source for the information, please?
with thanks again :)

Hi nametabpoppy , I got the information from Ancestry ..As a new starter to genealogy it is always best to check as much information yourself and then confirm the information from your cousins tree ...You can search www.familysearch.org which is a free site if you put in John Bateman born 1856 Westmorland there are several records there ..Including the 1881 census
Hope this helps good luck with your research and if you need anymore help just let us know

Following the previous posts from various helpful contributors, part of which concerned a putatative Jane Rawes, who may or may not have been the first wife of my 2xgrandfather John Bateman, I have been able to confirm that Jane Rawes was indeed the very person.
The breakthrough turned out to be two specific details from a proper copy of their marriage certificate (19-04-1882). Jane Rawe's father is given as William Rowlandson, and one of the witnesses was an Agnes Brownrigg.
Further digging and cross-correlation revealed that Jane's mother (Agnes Rawes) was single when Jane was born in 1860 at Dobsole (Dob's Hole) Lambrigg, but married William Rowlandson very shortly after (perhaps within weeks). In subsequent records (eg 1861 and 1871 censuses), Jane is then listed as Jane Rowlandson. So, no wonder it was difficult to find her in the years between her birth and marriage.
As to Agnes Brownrigg, she turned out to be Jane's first cousin - the daughter of Isaac & Isabella (nee Rowlandson) Brownrigg. Isabella being the sister of William Rowlandson. At the time of Jane's wedding she and Agnes Brownrigg were living on adjacent farms (Whin How & Deep Slack, Whinfell) - both run by the Rowlandson family.
Many thanks again to those who first provided hints and possibilities for a Jane Rawes. Without those kind contributions, I wouldn't have had a starting point, other than family memory that John Bateman was indeed twice married. Poor Jane died at 23, a year or so after her marriage.

Thank you for your very prompt post, with so many good references.
As it happens, I have located several of them over the last few months, but thank you for your trouble.
Do you have a particular interest in the Bateman family?
with best wishes

No, just filling in time until breakfast. ;D
Have added to above post.
Anything you need searching for?

thank you again for the updates - again some of which I'm already aware (but not all).
You strike me as someone who has a very efficient filing & cross-referencing system
As to your open-ended offer - there are umpteen sources that I would ultimately wish to unearth, but I can't presume to flood anyone. The Bateman clan is prolific in Westmorland through many generatons.
As it happens, the family background of John Bateman's (1856-1925) second wife - Mary Ann Park (1870-1955) isn't particularly well documented. Her father was a Robert Park. so, any snippets welcome.
Your remark about pre-breakfast makes me wonder about your location. I am in UK, time now 23.00 hrs
many thanks

Many thanks again - your key extra information this time was the maiden name (Clark) for the mother of the many children of Robert and Agnes Park (I hadn't tracked down these birth records).
I had suspected that Mary Ann's mother's maiden name might be Clark, but the connection with all these possible siblings had yet to be made.
One of the tantalising gaps in records is that all these siblings appear in censuses with Robert & Agnes Park as head and wife at some stage, whereas Mary Ann is the only one who does not appear with whom I now am confident are her parents.
I agree that it is likely she is the Mary Park lodging with Mary Hoggarth in 1881.
The unravelling also confirms that the widow Agnes Park living with John and Mary Ann Bateman at Mountain View in 1911 is indeed Mary Ann's mother.
Many thanks again
My next focus is to locate parents of Robert Bateman (ca 1815-1890), wheelwright & carpenter at Beck Foot, Westmorland.

thank you again
As before, some information I already had, but also there are some new sources.
The MyHeritage tree is (as is often the case for such sites) full of branches to explore.
I always take care with their interpretation, but it is an excellent starting point for future exploration.
I will have to tend to other things for now, so won't trouble you for a while.
Perhaps I would PM you in future?
With best wishes

Hello Jamjar
I'm wondering whether you might have any information on the marriage of William Bateman (b ca 1801) and Mary Fawcett (b ca 1806). MyHeritage reckons it is in 1825 in Firbank, Westmorland, but I can find no corroborative evidence. Any clues would be gratefully received.
with best wishes,
-
No, I can’t help you with that one.
I only have access to free sites. So, if you can’t see it on FamilySearch or FreeReg, neither would I. :-\
