Title: Charles Power travels to New York
Post by: Murrell on Sunday 28 July 19 14:16 BST (UK)
Good Afternoon l had seen Charles Power arriving New York 4th August 1956  the ship was named Britannic.
Charles born 1908 Wexford and left Ireland to work in England 1949.
He left his wife Kathleen nee Ward.
I haven't found his death in England or Ireland.
I am wondering how l could  locate further information on this Charles, so l can eliminate from my search.
Thank you for any help

I do see the inward on Aug. 4 1956 and an outward Charles  Power  27 Sep 1956 (on the Mauretania). Same V number so same person. (All to/ from NY)

What I don't see are any outward or incoming (UK) for the same person.

When he arrived, the top of his page says Tourist Class from Cobh, which was no longer part of the UK. The ship had left Liverpool - if you page back a few images there is a list of people who left from Liverpool.
Maybe he got off at Cobh on the way back.

He was a US Citizen at the time, are you sure this is the right man? Was he in the US earlier?

Tourist class from Cobh 28 July 1956
Non-immigrants
Charles Power, 2310 North Newcastle Avenue, Chicago, 35, Illinois
v.1985931, Irish

note on line 16.
Aliens 15 U.S.C.'s NIL

[presumably USC = US citizens, but I don't know what NIL would mean.]

Outward bound it says he was headed to Cobh, but this time the top of the sheet says Manifest of outward bound aliens.  ??

I don't see any Charles Power at that address on the 1940 census, but 16 years is a long time for someone to stay in one place. The Chicago City Directories are not online after 1947, so no help there.

In  Jan. 1951 a John O'Mara age 14 was living at 2310 N. Newcastle Av., presumedly the son of Patrick & Irene O'Mara.

In June 1960 a John O'Meara was living at 2310 N. Newcastle Av. He received a doctoral degree form Northwestern university.

From SS Applications of their children and censuses: Patrick J O'Mara (b 1899, Illinois) and Irene M Hallen (b 1902, Illinois)

A tree at ancestry says that Irene Hallen was the daughter of Walter Otto Von Hallen and Agnes Callaghan (b Aug 1872, Ireland, d 1954, Chicago). Irene's age matches up with Agnes and Walter's household on the 1920 census.

An Agnes Callaghan married Walter Otto Von Hallen on 1 Nov 1898, in Cook County, Illinois.

Does O'Meara or Callaghan match anything you already know about Charles? If so, this could be him. If not, who knows.

Many, many thanks for all your responces.
The Charles Power I'm searching was living with his family in Ireland until 1949/8. I don't have any evidence to say he was a U.S. Citizen. I know he went to England to work, probably some kind of labouring type work. He never returned back to his family!
I think l can maybe rule this Charles off my list.
But once again thank you all for your speedy replies.
