Title: Passenger Lists to/from Barbados 1845-1852
Post by: JohnG_Swansea on Saturday 03 August 19 09:14 BST (UK)
Whilst Researching James Fitchew Cox (b: 1806, Bedminster, Bristol) we have some significant markers:

We have looked, on both Ancestry & FamilySearch, for passenger lists both 'To' and 'From' Barbados, to see if any other members of the family travelled with them. It is clear that Rosa Ranyard Cox travelled in the return party as she appears in a number of subsequent UK census returns.  It is to us a mystery what happened to Annie Catherine Cox as there are no subsequent footprints for her.

Whilst we have been offered passenger lists to South Africa and Tasmania, nothing has been offered for Barbados, what if anything are we doing wrong?

Any help and/or guidance would be appreciated, Thank you.

As far as I know there are no surviving passenger lists for UK arrivals or departures in that period, and I have never come across any passenger lists for arrivals in or departures from Barbados.

Annie Catherine is not mentioned in James Fitchew Cox's will (written in August 1852) so presumably she died in infancy. The children listed are Mary Sayer Cox, Agnes Elizabeth Cox, Samuel Fitzhugh Cox, and Rosa Ranyard Cox.

Thank you Shaun,

Well that closes down one of the avenues of enquiry for this particular family.

Insofar as the two children born in St Michaels, Barbados are concerned, if we want to trace copies of the original documents we have been pointed towards two unsorted bundles, probably better described as film strips, both of which appear to have over 700 images therein. If we ever settle down to inspect each image we might even come across an image for the death of Annie Catherine, if in fact she actually died there.  There are two other options:
Thank again for your observations.

Wowww,

However did you do that so quickly?

All we were offered were links to two un-sorted films.

Thank you indeed!

I realised that the filmed volumes each consist of several registers from all the different churches and chapels in St Michael's Parish. So there are several runs in each film, each run in date order and each in a different hand. So it was just a question of going through looking at every 10th page then tracking to the date in question each time I came to a new run. It didn't take long to find the right pages.

Shaun,

Well lets hope I remember that next time I'm pointed towards an unsorted film strip.

How true.

Thank you.

This is some months back, but thank you for this information. I am descended from Mary Sayer Cox, who married in Australia and moved to New Zealand.

Welcome to RootsChat.

Mary Sayer Cox is on a branch other than which my wife's ancestors are on, the divide coming via the brothers Stephen COX(b:1776) & John COX(b1780), our primary route took us into the depths of Southern and Central Africa being Natal & Kinshasa/ Léopoldville, but unfortunately several sub-branches of Stephen's line are looking a bit thin.  Having said that our line to Mary Sayer COX has reached her marriage in Australia but hasn't progressed beyond that.

I have sent you a separate message through the RootsChat 'Personal Message' system.
