Title: Immigration to Australia
Post by: David Senior on Monday 12 August 19 07:37 BST (UK)
Hi
I am new to Roots Chat
My great grandfather came out from Ireland to Queensland in 1879
He seemed to acquire a dairy farm on the Darling Downs
Does anyone have any ideas for me?
Thank you
Julie

So, apart from the information already listed, was there something in particular you wanted to know about the family?

I am interested to find out about the dairy farm here - is there any way to find out how he acquired it?
Cheers

I don't have any experience with researching land acquisitions, but records such as this might reveal something:

http://www.archivessearch.qld.gov.au/Search/AgencyDetails.aspx?AgencyId=18
https://data.qld.gov.au/dataset/land-orders-1861-to-1874

There are others which google might help you find though I am unsure where to find exactly what you seek (though I'm sure that someone will be able to help you).  :)

Not related to you question about the farm in Australia and you may already have this but on the children's birth Certs (James, Ellen, John and Michael) the address is Kilnamona in Tipperary. Frederika which I assume is Winifred the address is Ballywilliam about 2km south of Kilnamona.

Various electoral roll entries show him at Westbrook in the 1880s - Toowoomba Queensland.

Here is a description of that Station from the newspaper Toowoomba Chronicle and Darling Downs General Advertiser  (click on the live link) of 4 April 1882.

Here is the live link to Trove, an absolutely fantastic resource freely provided by the National Library of Australia.   https://trove.nla.gov.au/

One of the options there is the Digitised newspapers,  the search option there is excellent.  All no charge, and you do not even have to log in to access those newspapers.

Hi Julie,
It looks as if you may have missed the answer to your query here.

He simply bought it!

Perhaps he had worked hard in the previous five years and had some good fortune too.

It looks as if the family prospered. ;D

I think Julie did see the answer to her question - she replied (inside a quote from JM) at #16.  :)
