Hi I am new to this forum but am hoping someone may be able to give me some help on the query below.
I am searching for my 2nd Great Grandfather George Alcock. All the Census I have state he was born in Bradford Yorkshire in 1851 but I just cant seem to find a Birth Record for him. His mum was Sarah Ann Alcock but I don't know if that was a maiden or married name. Some of the census say S and some say W?
George Died on 14th April 1916 in Acomb. He was married to Hannah Mortimer who was from Rufforth.
His Mum Sarah Ann died 15th Jan 1888 in York but she was born in Ireland. Thats all the census says, no area of Ireland is mentioned.
Any advice would be awesome but I fear this is a very tall brickwall!!
Many thanks
Teresa

Sarah Alcock probably born 1814= 1817 gleaned from the census. Attempting to find where the Alcocks lived in Ireland at that time is difficult and yet knowing that Alcock might be her married name. I searched the Tithe Applotment Books as the nearest record in time.
I have arranged the results by County. by county .Special note I was astonished at the amount of entries for Edward J Alcock. Is it a prank or error? So for brevity in this reply having found 126 entries in total I have reduced them by 57 lines as follows
23 entries for Alcock Edward J Durrus Cork 1830 down to one
10 entries for Alcock Edward J Kilcrohane Kilcrohane Cork 1831 down to one

Hi,
I think I may possibly have a link - on my mother's side, I go back to a Samuel Moore who lived in Annaghmore, Armagh. His son, William, married Maria Alcock from Drumnott and in 1863 they emigrated to Australia. From the marriage record, it gives Maria's father's name as Joseph Alcock and mother as Ann Potts. Interestingly, a Robert and Sarah Potts were witnesses at William Moore's wedding in 1862.

There were two relevant births of a George Alcock in the Registration district of Basford, one 1851, one 1852. I can easily imagine Basford being misheard or mistranscribed as Bradford.

The NAI tythe site indexes every instance of a name. A landlord can feature in multiple townlands, and also in correspondence, certification, etc, and will be indexed for each occurrence.

For what it is worth, there is only one Sarah Anne Alcock born 1820-1840, in the RI database.
Bapt. Feb 1828, Cahir CofI, Co. Waterford. [Sic. surely Co. Tipperary?]
