Title: Martin Wilkinson
Post by: theolddear on Sunday 01 September 19 12:03 BST (UK)
Looking for any information on Martin Wilkinson born Flimby Cumberland 1902.  I know he married Eleanor Hewitt.  in the census of 1881 he was living with his niece Margaret husband Andrew and grandchildren Martin and Eleanor.      Margaret was born in 1846 and in 1851 again listed as a niece but in 1861, when she was 15 listed as daughter.  I believe Eleanor was mother to Margaret so why call her niece!  Margarets son was Martin Wilkinson Souter.  I am looking to solve this muddled mystery.  Why would Martin list her twice as a niece and once as a daughter.  I am intrigued!

A good starting point in disentangling this family might be to look for Margaret's birth record on the GRO index to see what her mother's maiden name is. You may also need to buy a pdf of the record to get clarity.

Thanks for all the information sent. I am now more confused than ever. It seems most strange that both Thomas and Margaret should have Hewitt as mother.  I have sent for Margarets birth cert.in the hope that her father is mentioned.  Why would Thomas be left with the family and Margaret removed?  So many questions to answer!

Thomas would be about 6 when his Mother died and Margaret a toddler.
Maybe the new Wife was not so comfortable with having toddler around.

Please let us know the outcome of the Birth Cert :)

Problem solved!  James Ward married Jane Hewitt.  She had a sister Eleanor Hewitt who married Martin Wilkinson.  After Jane died, Margaret was sent to live with Eleanor and Martin her aunt and uncle. This was also how the name Wilkinson came to be in the SOUTER family. Once the connections were made it was quite simple!  I cannot find what happened to Thomas Ward who was another child of James and Jane. He was born in 1842.  However,I have not investigated very far as yet.

You mentioned not knowing what happened to Thomas Ward.

This may be him;
UK, Apprentices Indentured in Merchant Navy, 1824-1910
Thomas Ward apprenticed 16 Nov 1855 aged 14 at Maryport to vessel Lott Bernard

OOh looking at image of record it has he drowned at Sea 14/6/1859. :'(
