Hi,
My Great x 2 grandmother's occupation on the 1851 census in Bo'ness was a Tambourer. I have since found out that this was something to do with lace making. Quite a few of the other women on the census form are listed as this, so I wondered if anyone knew if there was a factory or employer of some sort in the area?
Many Thanks.

Embroiderer I think? tambourer of muslin I've come across in Linlithgow..

Skoosh is right - Embroiderer using a Tambour

Maybe even done at home? ;D
Skoosh.

I would imagine that was possible Skoosh, I know my lacemakers worked from home.

Thanks all. Yes working from home does seem probable .

Could it have been a form of needle-lace worked on fabric stretched over a circular (tambour) frame?

It was indeed embroidery (of any kind, not just needle lace) with the fabric stretched over a frame.
My grandmother had a tambour and used it sometimes for embroidery.

Hi Meggie
The sister of my great grandfather was also listed as a Tambourer in the 1851 Census, living in Cambusnethan AND the list of surnames under your post includes two which crop up in my ancestral line, Gibb and Archibald.
Wondering if we might have a connection...

Hi again Meggy1 and sorry got your ID wrong in my first post! Please see my remarks about Gibb and Archibald names. Only just joined and can't yet try to email you direct!
